ANGELO ESPOSITO

another centerman, but you can't blame them for not passing on a guy
that was highly rated and slipped down to 20th.

is staal moving to the wing?

i read somewhere that patrick roy played him at wing a bit just to
make sure that he had some experience there.

do you think he'll make the team for 2007-08?

one thing about staal is that he did play well on the wing and last
season at least, he was more of a goal scorer than an assist guy. but
he was a young 18 not expected to make the team. he admitted the game
was a little bit too fast for him re: seeing the ice and setting
people up.

he stated his goal was to make the team and i'm sure he's got a pretty
big chip on his shoulder. i'm holding out a little hope that he ends
up playing LW wing on one of the top two lines.

as long as he pans out and has an impact for the team i'm good with
that.

IMHO it is great pick as for 20th choice !!!
Kid is very fast & skilled, so among other talents he may become real
threat.
Wow, I didn't expect it will be so good draft for Pens !

I hope not. Esposito has more "physical circumstances" to be a winger & he
is fast. Winger should be fast.

i think that made him 18 this past february. i admit it'll be tough
for him to break in, but one of the criticisms is that he couldn't be
the focal point and carry a team-- he certainly wouldn't have to do
that on a line with either sid or geno.

ever hear of the sophmore slump? i'm not saying staal will slump but
i'm not sure year two is "much easier."

yes.

i agree he was *very* impressive in playoff hockey mode.

agreed.

so that means he's centering the 3rd line? maybe not the worst thing
for a guy who is such a great two-way player. i just wonder if he can
take full advantage of his offensive abilites in that role. he had
some awesome chemistry as a winger with malkin IMHO. maybe that is
short-sighted though.

I highly doubt it. I expect him to help make the Scranton Pens a
Championship team. He may play a few games (depending on Baby Pens play),
but not not enough to earn a stay.

His big debut will be in the new arena. :)

Fuck. I'd love to see that. They come SO close, SO often... and then
they have their talent pool raided by the big team. lol

check me on my math, here, but won't he still only be 17 at the start of
the season?

What ARE the rules on that? Would he be forced to juniors? could he play
for AHL/NHL before turning 18?

No, I suspect that in the nearest future [07-08] he won't be ready for the
NHL level.
Take a look on his stats:

2005-06 Quebec Remparts QMJHL 57gp 39g 59a 98pts
2006-07 Quebec Remparts QMJHL 60gp 27g 52a 79pts

One thing is obvious - he didn't make much progress as many expected from
him. He didn't gain enough physical strength & maturity [yet!] to get 100pts
in QMJHL & to become this way a strong candidate for # 1-3 pick this year.
That means he has much work to do in Baby Pens now.
But there is second obvious thing here... kid has a talent & i am sure he
will be a huge addition to the Pens in the future.

Now he will play his second season and there is always big difference
between playing 1st and playing 2nd year of career. Of course second is much
easier. Jordan was amazing last season, playing smart, both-ends hockey. He
was better & better every game & in the play-off phase he was one of our
best players. And it was 18 years old Jordan Staal! Well, I cant wait to see
19 years old Jordan Staal & I want to see him in the circle, not on the wing
:)

I'm sure that "sophomore slump" doesn't affect Staals ;)
I've got evidence for that:

Eric Staal
1st year: 81gp 11g 20a 31pts
2nd year: 82gp 45g 55a 100pts

;)

IMHO he would get enough ice-time to develope correctly if he would
centering the strong 3rd line, 1st PK line & play on Power Play.
Other thing is that Pens have now a terrible winger deficit & it is possible
that Jordan would have to play on wing :(
Damn, Hartnell was so close :\

yeah, i dunno why i even think about-- with therrien as coach the one
certaintly is that there will be *no* consistency of lines. they'll
change every week.

; -D

with rex and roberts returning shero is sure to focus on the D during
FA. i wonder who he'll get.

He is 18 years old now. His birthday is 2/20/1989 so he will turn 19 in
february. You are aware that we are in the year of 2007, right? ;-)
