There's a guy here in Ottawa who claims to be the son of Tony Iommi... runs
"Dungeon Records". You should see his kit. He must have 150 pieces. He
was the subject of a song by a local band called Furnaceface, who wrote
about his obsession. "The Ballad of Richard Iommi". My old band used to
practice in his basement studio under a print shop in Ottawa.

Then he got arrested.

That's what classic rock gets you.

Heh...yeah, when I was a kid, I had pretty good copy of a Neil Peart
kit. But then I started gigging a lot. I'm sure it's no suprise to you
that I was very quickly down to a 4 piece kit when I could get away
with it. I never go out with more than 7 pieces; it just doesn't make
sense.

Ken, have you ever checked out the solo work Terry Bozzio does? He's
about the only one who uses an insanely big kit who can really justify
it.

peace,

Rog

Terry did a drum clinic here about 9 years ago. We got to walk around the
set before he came out and I took some pictures. God knows how many pieces
it is, but he used every damn one. He was a soft spoken guy and incredibly
smart and gifted.

For the rest of us folk, the less the better as it saves our backs over
time!

I posted over in R.M.M.P. (remember that place?) that I realized I was
starting to get old the day I bought single braced stands.

I've seen Terry a bunch of times, solo and with various bands.
Heh...as soft spoken a guy as he is, he can still be pretty feisty
when you ask the wrong/right question...

As much as I enjoy listening to Terry do it, I don't have Terrys
vision on drums. If I want to play classical music, I'll do it on
piano. Where I come from, 4 pieces is almost always enough.

By the way - the hero of Terrys clinics is his tech - the guy is
amazing. He can set that whole monstrosity up in about an hour. Good
player, too.

peace,

Rog

The feisty didn't come out the night I was there. What could be a wrong
question? Did someone diss DW?

My girl is 6 now. She sometimes wants to play. I stick a practice pad in
front of her and then get easily frustrated that she's not swinging her left
stick the right way. Otherwise, she does ok. I really think that I...I
mean she.... needs a new drumset :)

You say he "claims" to be the son of Tony Iommi, but is he just a sicko or
do you think he may really be his son? And why would he play drums?. Sounds
to me like if thats his schtick he should play guitar, not drums. Remember
Frank Marino claimed the soul of Hendrix ended up in his body? At least
Marino had a little career with his snake oil, sounds like the best your
"Iommi" ever did was take in $50 at the local Pub opening for Furnaceface.

For what, impersonating Iommi?

Interesting. I just finished listening to UKs second album "Danger
Money" and
"Black Light Syndrome" by Bozzio, Levin & Stevens is also in my
itunes library.
Great music there.
The one time I saw Zappa Terry was playing with him (as was Eddie
Jobson who
Terry hooked up with to join UK after Holdsworth & Bruford left).

Heh...no. Someone asked him about Blacklight Syndrome, and Terry told
exactly why they weren't going to tour or release any more albums. He
didn't waste any time on sugar coating how he felt.

I do like my percussion toys...I always have a bag full of cowbells,
agogo bells, and a variety of other sounds. I have a heavy background
in latin music - you can't just leave that stuff behind.

Sadly, those were before my concert going days...would have loved to
have seen that.

On the Zappa front, a friend of mine runs a very good Zappa tribute
band, called Project/Object, which regularly features Zappa alum like
Ike Willis and Ed Mann.

peace,

I think HE thinks he's Tony's son. He plays drums because he's a shitty
guitar player, I guess. His story is that his teenage mom had a little go
of Tony way back when. Who knows. If his mom looked anything like Richard,
I find it hard to believe.

Furnaceface used to practice in his warehouse studio. Pretty much everyone
who did anything around here in the late 80's early 90's couldn't resist
that place. He never seemed to charge anyone.

Nah, drugs. I'm guessing he charged for those, but I don't know the full
story. It happened a few years after I knew him.

Classic Rock = bad taste = living in the past = delusions = drug habit =
jail. Questions ? ;-)

Ah jeeze, Rush? You? C'mon Rog. Just when I thought I knew you. That's
the band that CanCon built. Jeeze I hate Rush.

I've never heard of him. I'm still impressed with complex arrangements, so
it sounds cool... I know Rick could really wail on that huge kit, but it
never left the studio. We had some parties down there where he'd make me
sing War Pigs (the only Ozzy song I knew... thank you Faith No More) and a
few Pearl Jam songs that my band used to do, but other than that, I'd never
seen anyone use that big of a kit in anything useful.
