Martin Brodeur has plagued the New York Rangers throughout his
brilliant career, standing as a tangible symbol of the New Jersey
Devils' dominance over their cross-river rival.
But the Rangers have gained the upper hand over their long-time
nemesis thanks to Henrik Lundqvist, who is resembling Brodeur more and
more with every passing game.
Lundqvist and the red-hot Rangers skated to a 4-2 victory over the
Devils on Wednesday night, improving to 3-0 in the season series
versus New Jersey while denying Brodeur his 500th career win.
It marked the latest in a disturbing trend for the Devils, who have
struggled to a 7-9-2 record this season while witnessing the once-
impenetrable Brodeur decline into a rather pedestrian goaltender.
Although he was on the wrong side of a few unlucky bounces on
Wednesday, Brodeur looked a step slow against the Rangers, perhaps
showing signs of age in his 906th career regular-season game.
"[Brodeur] has had so many good games against us," said Rangers
captain Jaromir Jagr, who scored a power-play goal against the nine-
time all-star. "He loves to play against the Rangers. It's nice to get
him back a little bit."
Brodeur, 35, fell to 5-9-1 this season while losing at home in
regulation to the Rangers for the first time in 11 games.
"I respect him so much," Jagr added. "It's not easy to stay on top of
your game for so many years."
A three-time Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur entered this season with a
38-14-2 career record, along with 15 ties, in 69 career appearances
vs. the Rangers.
Those numbers do not include New Jersey's series sweep of New York in
the 2006 Eastern Conference quarter-finals, when Brodeur allowed a
total of four goals in four games.
But after being at a disadvantage between the pipes for the better
part of a decade, the Rangers have used the strong play of Lundqvist
to turn the tables against the Devils.
Lundqvist made 22 saves on Wednesday night, improving his career
regular-season record against the Devils to 8-2-3. The Swedish
netminder has a career 1.57 goals-against average against New Jersey
and has yielded only three goals in his three wins vs. the Devils this
season.
Lundqvist saved his best for the end on Wednesday in vintage Brodeur
fashion, denying Brian Gionta's breakaway attempt with just under six
minutes remaining.
"An absolutely great save," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "Henrik, as
he's done a number of times this year when we've needed it the most,
stepped up and made a very big save for us."
After struggling to a 2-5-1 start this season, the Rangers have turned
around their campaign courtesy of Lundqvist, who is making an early
bid for the Vezina with a 1.64 GAA, a .938 save percentage and four
shutouts in 17 games.
The outstanding numbers and eye-popping saves likely will yield big
bucks for Lundqvist, who is eligible to receive a new restructured
contract in January.
But after another terrific outing against the Devils, the 25-year-old
Lundqvist remained in awe of the venerable Brodeur, who still is
searching for win No. 500.
"It feels good," Lundqvist said. "It's great for him to reach 500, but
not tonight. It was our win. We played a really good road game."
"Right now, they're definitely having the best of us," Brodeur added.
If Lundqvist keeps playing at his current level, the Rangers will have
the best of the Devils for a long time to come.
