ATLANTA, GA (Sept. 2, 2005) -- The Atlanta Thrashers have signed
unrestricted free agent goaltender Mike Dunham, according to Executive
Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Terms of the deal were
not disclosed.
"In signing Mike, we have added a solid, veteran goalie with more than
300 games of NHL experience to our club," said Waddell. "This addition
is a great complement to our goaltending corps, and gives us the talent
and experience in net that is necessary to be successful in this
league."
Dunham, 33, has earned a 129-163-39 record, 2.69 goals-against average
and 18 shutouts in 358 NHL games over eight seasons with New Jersey,
Nashville and the New York Rangers. Dunham has represented the United
States in numerous international competitions, including three Winter
Olympic Games (1992, 1994, 2002), winning a silver medal at Salt Lake
City in 1992, and three World Hockey Championships (1992, 1993, 1998).
The native of Johnson City, N.Y., posted four shutouts and a 2.97 GAA in
13 games with Skelleftea of Sweden's second division league last season,
and led New York Rangers goaltenders with 16 wins and 57 games, and
shared first on the team with two shutouts in 2003-04. Acquired by the
Rangers from Nashville for Rem Murray, Tomas Kloucek and Marek Zidlicky
on Dec. 12, 2002, Dunham earned an overall record of 35-47-11 with seven
shutouts in 100 games with New York.
The 6-3, 200-pound goaltender 81-104-24 record and eight shutouts over
five seasons with Nashville from 1998-2002, including career highs in
games played (57) and wins (23) in 2001-02. Dunham, selected by
Nashville from New Jersey in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft, helped the
Predators win their first game in franchise history on Oct. 16, 1998.
Dunham, selected by New Jersey in the third round, 54th overall, in the
1990 NHL Entry Draft, recorded a 13-12-4 record in 41 games over two
seasons with the Devils. During his rookie season on 1996-97, he won the
William Jennings Trophy with Martin Brodeur as the goalie tandem with
the fewest goals-against in the NHL.
In 1994-95, Dunham helped the Albany River Rats capture the American
Hockey League's Calder Cup Championship, posting a 6-1 playoff record,
and was selected as co-winner of the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the
playoff's most valuable player. That season he shared the Harry "Hap"
Holmes Memorial Trophy with Corey Schwab as the goaltending duo with the
lowest goal-against in the league. He was named to the AHL Second All-
Star Team and posted a 30-10-2 record in 44 appearances during the 1995-
96 season with Albany.
Dunham played three seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of
Maine (Hockey East), and helped the Black Bears capture the 1993 NCAA
Division I Championship. He was named to the NCAA East First All-Star
Team and the Hockey East First All-Star Team that season, and led Hockey
East in wins in 1992-93 (21) and GAA in 1990-91 (2.96).
