On Saturday night the Flames returned to Spectrum ice in an effort to
maintain their foothold on the top of the EPL league table. The
Spectrum side proceeded to put 55 shots on the Romford Raiders net,
compared to just 21 in reply, but the final scoreboard read
differently, with each team collecting a point after an overtime 3-3
tie, leaving the Flames a single point ahead of the Sheffield
Scimitars in the league title race. Despite outshooting their
opponents 22-6 in the first session, the Raiders left the period with
a 2-1 edge. At 3:00 Vaclav Zavoral opened the scoring for the Flames
for a 1-0 lead. Stefan Ketola hit back for the Raiders at 13:35, and
then Andrej Sporina put them in front at 17:43 with a powerplay strike
to finish the period up by a goal. At 21:34 Nick Cross knotted the
score at 2 each, but just under 6 minutes later the Raiders took a 3-2
lead thanks to Rob Stewart, leaving the Flames with work to do in the
final stanza. The Flames continued to pressure the travellers and
found the tying goal at 48:21 when Stewart Potts redirected a perfect
cross ice Ollie Bronnimann pass to pull to 3-3, but the remainder of
the period, and a further 5 minutes of sudden death overtime, would
not be enough to solve the game, leaving each club with a single
league table point.
