The Flames second game of a home double weekend saw the long awaited
clash between the Surrey side and the table topping Sheffield
Scimitars, and the Spectrum outfit made the most of the table climbing
opportunity when a Milos Melicherik goal in the 48th minute broke a 2-2
deadlock to give the Flames the lead and an eventual 3-2 win. Things
did not start out so rosy for the Flames, however, as the travelling
club opened the scoring at 2:14 on the back of a Les Millie strike to
take a 1-0 lead. The Flames replied at 8:45 with Melicherik's first of
the evening. Just ahead of the 5 minute mark of the middle session,
Stuart Potts gave the Flames their first lead, making it 2-1. That lead
lasted until 32:44 when a Ron Shudra blast beat Joe Watkins to convert
a 5 on 3 Sheffield man advantage, tying the score at 2 each as the
clubs headed to the final period. With the possibility of overtime
looming, Melicherik found the mark for the win, sending a near sell out
Spectrum crowd home happy in the knowledge that the Flames are now just
2 points shy of the league table lead.
