Guildford Flames 3-1 Sheffield Scimitars
Saturday 30th December 2006
English Premier League
Guildford Spectrum, Parkway, Guildford, Surrey, GU1 1UP, England
The Flames lined up for their last game of 2006 in what would be, to
this point, the most important match of the schedule against joint
first place partners, Sheffield Scimitars, on Spectrum ice in a clash
over the top of the league table. The Surrey side did not disappoint
the 1600+ Spectrum attendees, finishing the game with a 3-1 win and a
2 point lead in the race for the league title. The home club could
not have asked for a better start when Vaclav Zavoral outmuscled a
Scimitars player for the puck behind the visitors goal, and quickly
made a centering feed on the tape of Stuart Potts who made no mistake
in tapping it in for a 1-0 lead before the game was one minute old.
Shortly thereafter, Zavoral did the damage himself to put the Flames
up by a pair before killing off the remainder of the opening session
to take a 2-0 lead to the first break. Both clubs exchanged golden
scoring opportunities over the first 10 minutes of the middle session,
but no further scoring until the Scimitars finally beat Tom Annetts in
the Flames net in the 35th minute to pull the score to 2-1, with
Robert Dowd taking the credit for the visitors opening strike. The
Flames successfully killed off a couple of penalties early in the 3rd
before getting a powerplay of their own in the 54th minute, and with
the skater advantage Milos Melicherik one timed a perfect Paul Dixon
pass to extend the Flames lead to 3-1 at 54:46, and the Flames took
the win and, more importantly, picked up sole possession of top spot
in the league table for the first time this season.
