The St. Louis Blues are willing to buy out forward Petr Cajanek from
his contract if Swiss SC Bern are willing to off-set the cost of the
buyout. SC Bern is believed interested in signing Cajanek and GM Sven
Leuenberger is reportedly negotiating with the Blues.

Cajanek has shown flashes of brilliance in his career, but remains
inconsistent. Some days he mails it in.

He has cleared waivers both last season, and now this season, which
tells me the other NHL teams are not very high on him either, even at
half price.

Yeah, but buying him out doesn't do much for the cap. Are you guys
anywhere near it? Plan to be?

We currently have 4 Million Dollars of Cap room, which includes the
Cajanek hit.

That's a little tight for my liking. You could have just sent him down
to the AHL (or suspended him if he wouldn't report) and his contract
comes off the cap (and before someone tries to correct me by spouting
back what I taught them two years ago - no, it doesn't technically come
off the cap, but it does for all intents and purposes).

You've got a team that has some good potential in a wide-open division.
If I were a Blues fan, I'd prefer to have as much wiggle-room as
possible come deadline time. But I don't really think that the Cajanek
contract is going to make or break your season. It'd just be nice to
have every dollar possible at the deadline.

Now I don't understand all this, but Andy Strickland, who is the Blues
Beat Reporter on ESPN radio in St. Louis has said that if Cajanek is
sold to SC Bern, he will only count $620K against the cap this year
and next. This is a savings over his current salary.

Also, I'm not sure about the Cap numbers, I got them from some
website. I don't think the Blues have used even close to 46 Million
towards the cap (which is what, 52?)

I have not heard one thing about the Blues being tight, so maybe
someone who has those numbers can help me out here.

Cajanek signed the deal just over an hour ago.

The deal was too good to pass up for Cajanek who will earn an
additional $900,000 from Ak Bars Kazan to play in the Russian Super
league.

He will still make the full $2 million dollars owed to him from the
St. Louis Blues this season.

Ak Bars Kazan will pay the Blues close to $ 1 million dollars to
acquire Cajanek, which is exactly what an NHL club would owe Cajanek
if they were to claim him on re-entry waivers (half of his NHL
salary).

Cajanek wishes the Blues would have bought him out as opposed to
waiving him just prior to the season. That way he would have had a
chance to sign with another NHL club and play in the league this
season. He feels his reputation may have been tarnished by being
waived.

The Blues did not have room on their roster to send him through re-
entry again to see if an NHL club would claim him. You can't have more
than 22 players on your roster to send a player through re-entry.

Cajanek says the St. Louis Blues will always be a special organization
to him because they were the ones who gave him a chance to play in the
NHL five years ago. He plans on returning to the NHL next season.
Cajanek will leave for Russia on Thursday.

Cajanek is one of the better pro's you will ever meet. He's a high
character person who has handled this situation with class. I wish him
the best of luck.

More to come,

Andy Strickland

I can't do a killfile because there is a "redeeming" quality about the
idiot trolls.

They can make me laugh.

Personally, in an instance like this, I think killfiles take a lot of
the fun out of usenet. I mean, you can't go just anywhere and get this
kind of entertainment. Plus it's archived, so you can go back and enjoy
it for years to come...it's like having it Tivo'd!

Onward and upward.

Good point. I suppose if what I wanted was a moderated forum, I'd
participate in a moderated forum.

The great thing about usenet is that you can go from a legitimate
hockey discussion (albeit rarely) to pepsi bottle races to some
rambling retard who's off his medication in the space of three posts.

It's freaking comedy gold.
