Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Marty Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils
captured the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender for the second
consecutive season and the fourth time in his storied career.
Brodeur, who also won the award in 2003 and 2004, finished with a
44-27-6 in 2007-08 with a 2.17 goals-against average and a .920 save
percentage. He posted four shutouts and led all goalies in minutes
played (4,635). He was once again the backbone of a hard-working
Devils team that finished second in the Atlantic Division.
Brodeur, who some argue is the best goaltender to ever play in the
NHL, garnered 113 points, while San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov totaled 106
points and Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist had 13 points.
The Vezina Trophy is voted on by the general managers of the NHL and
has been awarded annually since 1927. It is the second-longest
continually-awarded individual postseason honor next to the Hart
Trophy.
In 2006, the only season in the last five that Brodeur did not win
this award, he finished second behind Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff.

Seriously. Lundqvist didn't even deserve to be nominated, and
certainly would not have had he played for any other team.

Did anyone enjoy Marty's cryptic comments about how he is looking
forward to the summer and the Devils rebuilding themselves into a
Stanley Cup contender again. Would The Viceroy be reading between the
lines with searing insight or just one too many tokes from peace
pipe... if The Viceroy interprets this as "If you lay me out to dry
with the same monkey crew we had last season, I'm outta here"? >> Stay informed about: Brodeur Wins Fourth Vezina |

I've seen some sour grapes from some folks out west who feel Nabokov was
robbed.
I have to say, the two had very similar seasons stat-wise, so I could
see him getting an edge in votes for that.
Sharks had slightly better #'s this year than NJ. scored more and
allowed 4 fewer. Sharks PP and PK were better and they have Joe Thornton
with 96 points. Maybe without Joe putting up those #'s, it could be said
Nabokov was the only reason for SJ to have the season they did, but
that's a tough one. After looking at the teams in front of them, look at
their stats. Marty faced about 200 shots more than Nabokov which tells
me he had a bit more work to do. His SV% and GAA were better. The Devils
D was terrible this year. Giveaways were plentiful and they let teams
setup shop in their end a little too much. I admit, I haven't seen a lot
of Sharks games this year, but from what I saw of them in the
post-season, they seemed to play a better all-around game than the
Devils which is why I would say Brodeur was more valuable to his team
than Nabokov was to his. They were both integral parts, as a goaltender
should be, but in the end It comes down to intangibles.

I got the impression he was trying to tell us something. Basically
saying what a lot of us already felt.

marty's amazing. unfortunately, the devils can't seem to figure out
that playing him over 70 times a year is stupid. say what you want
about the make up of the team this year, no scoring etc...but marty
was tired in the playoffs and did not play well. he's not getting any
younger. find a good backup and let him play 20+ games. it still gives
marty ample opportunity to win 40. sprinkle in a handful of wins from
the backup and you're in the playoffs no problem with a rested marty.
they're wasting him.

Good plan, but Marty wants to play every game and no one wants to tell
him he can't. Anyway, while Marty wasn't great in the playoffs, the
rest of the team was awful.

every goalie wants to play as much as possible, but even marty needs
to recognize the pattern here and rest a little. and i agree the team
didn't look sharp either against the rags. even with marty on his game
they weren't good enough to win it all.
we used to joke in our group that tampa was our farm team for awhile.
it stopped being funny when fedetenko single handedly killed them in
the '04 ecf and then was clutch in helping tampa win the cup. they
used to trade a lot amongst themselves. now, not so much. as for
vinny, he didn't want to stay in philly and let it be known. he helped
them get in the playoffs and ignite briere with gagne out and he had a
decent post season but was inconsistent. i'm happy to see him go. at
least they got something back for him since he's a UFA. who knows if
he'll even sign in tampa. not sure what they're cap situation is and
they've got new ownership.
back to marty. do the devils have any good goalie prospects in their
system? if they don't they better hope to find one in the next year or
two b/c marty doesn't have too much time left.
