The sides still have a way to go before working out a deal, but Bryce
Salvador's agent, Carlos Sosa, told The Record today that he has had
"preliminary discussions" with Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello
about a new contract for the unrestricted free agent defenseman.

"We've had some preliminary discussions, but nothing firm as of yet,"
Sosa said. "Lou's got his entry-level system guys to deal with right
now. That's the main deadline coming up (Sunday) and then we've got
the draft (June 20). But we have had some good and interesting
preliminary discussions and we'll go from there."

Sosa said Salvador liked playing in New Jersey after being traded to
the Devils from St. Louis on Feb. 26 . Still, that doesn't mean he'd
pass up his chance to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 -
unless the price is right.

"I think it depends on what the Devils want to do," Sosa said. "I know
Bryce thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Devils. He loved the system.
He loved the structure. He loved the culture of the team. Having said
that, this is our first shot at UFA and it sstill has to be right for
everybody. But it certainly would be a top choice for Bryce. And I
think the Devils liked him. He's the type of player that fits
seamlessly within their system. I think it's a good fit, but,
obviously, the financial end of it has to be a good fit as well."

As mentioned above, Sunday is the deadline to sign players selected in
the 2006 draft. Third-round pick Kirill Tulupov remains unsigned and
might end up going back into the draft.

"We haven't made a decision yet on if we're going to keep him,"
Lamoriello said today.

peace,

Rog

Ah, The Gomezian School of Economics.

I think Salvador was a good fit - when he wasn't injured. My sense is
that he isn't going to get more durable - on the other hand, I really
don't want to look at Brookbank doing quality minutes each night.

Isn't "Brookbank doing quality minutes" a contradiction in terms?

Y'know when I hear "Brookbank" I get this Huck Finn image of a young
man sitting on the bank of a.....ok ok.... Maybe the image I get is
of Brent Sutter as Sargeant Carter and while Brookbank channels Jim
Neighbors without the baritone voice but otherwise filling the bill.
No wait, perhaps that was the early season version of Oduya. Or
historically speaking....maybe Lyle "Pyle" Odelein? Yeah, that's it.

I would say Odie was more like the Private Pyle in "Full Metal Jacket"
