Waiting for someone to point this out. The "new" rules have seemed to
have evolved again. Now, they call less, but can still make the
chintziest of calls whenever they want. 10 "hooks" that don't slow down a
player go uncalled, then "poof", they pull one out!
Really, bake a cake for the ref before a game and deliver it to his room.
There's about 40 plays a game a ref COULD call, and he pulls out anywhere
from 4 to 15 of them depending on his mode, the alignment of the sun and
moon, and the price of the tea in China I guess. This is another reason
for Carbonneau to keep the whining in check (which he has been doing
better lately IMO). Don't piss off a ref, because he can call a penalty
at any moment of his choosing under the arguemnt that it is a "new NHL"
call.
However, what gauls me the most is when commentators say "they'll call
that every time" after a minor hook like Ryder's. It's like they are
propoganda shills for the league because NO, they DON'T call that every
time anymore...just whenever they feel like it.
