Edmonton scores in the second on a fluky deflection/knuckle-ball
puck. Girardi ties it up with about 12 minutes to go in the third on
a fluky deflection/knuckle-ball puck. Rangers gain momentum from this
goal, and are slightly outplaying the Oilers.
Cue the energy line! Hollweg hits a guy from behinds hard into the
boards, and takes a major. A few seconds later Straka grabs on to
some Oiler's hand and goes for a ride for a short while, taking a
holding penalty.
The Oilers, being a team that isn't the Rangers, actually get shots on
a 5 on 3, and score almost instantly.

They weren't good in the first, but Lundqvist bailed them out. They
were even in the second, but the fluky power play goal happened. The
Oilers played prevent from 20:00 to play in the third, and Girardi
tied it up. Then the actual game started, and the Rangers shot
themselves in the foot for the rest of the night.
Eventually toward the end of regulation, Avery drew a suspect roughing
penalty. The Rangers pulled Lundqvist, the Rangers skated around for
99% of the time refusing to even consider a shot, and then Jagr made a
nice pass, Drury made a smart play, and they scored.
The Rangers had a 4 on 3 PP in OT for a short amount of time, but the
only shot they even attempted was from the blue line that was
blocked. It's like shooting was 5th on their list of things to do.
Shanahan got hurt in the third, and Straka got hurt in OT, so Renney
had to activate his thought-core for the shootout. That subsequently
failed, and his random number generator selected Scott Gomez (2 for 3
lifetime, with no attempts last year for the Devils), Sean Avery (0
for 2 lifetime) and Jaromir Jagr for the shootout, while better
options Marcel Hossa and Petr Prucha sat on the bench.
All three shot attempts were pathetic, and Lundqvist got beat on the
first one.
So in short, they were terrible in Edmonton.
