Unfortunately he left his skates...and according to the Ottawa
announcers it was also a late hit. McGratten (sp?) and a couple other
Sens veered right for him. Downie was lucky Gratts never got him.
Man, what an ugly hit. I'm trying not to be a homer...trying really
hard...

Correction, Gratts did get him while Downie was covered in
Sens...Gratts was wailing downward onto Downie's head while Boulerice
was pulling at/wailing on Gratts.

Yeah, that's what the Sen announcers said, this hit, assuming he gets
suspended, will cost him a spot. He got an attempt to injury (kill)
match penalty, gone for the game.

Sweet justice for Neil leaving his feet with a flying knee into McCabe
last night. Can Downie do it some more please?

What penalty did Downie receive? He has not played after the hit. This
will cost him his chance to make the team

Ok, I didn't see the game, so I just looked up the hit on YouTube. It
didn't really look like that big of a deal. Yeah, he left his feet,
and that's wrong, but he was coasting in, not charging. Also, Downie
leaving his feet isn't really doing much. He looks like he's still
smaller than the guy when he's in the air. To me it looked like the
guy just didn't see him coming so he didn't brace for the hit. I'd be
willing to bet if he did see him coming, Downie probably would have
bounced off of him.

BUT

like I said, I didn't see the game. I just saw a slow motion replay.

Why would it cost him a chance at a spot on the team?

Horrible hit. He should be suspended for ten games minimum. All he had to
do was not leave his feet but to go pretty much the full length of the rink
and then jump higher so he catches the opponents head is not what the game
needs. With his reputation, and the League probably wanting to send a
message to a guy who hasn't even played in his first regular season NHL
game, I'm guessing a minimum of a ten game suspension will be levied today.
It may be more.

That was a really bad hit. He got way up off his skates and he took a run
at him from the blue line. Up here, they're calling for his head, and I'm
afraid they might get it, given Downie's rep in junior and whatnot. Maybe
it wouldn't be the worst thing to set a higher precedent for hits like
that.

I totally agree... It did not look that "illegal". He left his feet just
barely before he made contact. To his credit, he did keep his elbows in
close. If he lead with his elbow, McAmmond would be dead. The announcers
on YouTube, first blame McAmmond for having his head down.

Another thing, the media and folks are forgetting, Downie is fighting for a
job. He is expected to land the big hit. This hit may have secured him a
job with the big team. Over the last several years, I've seen more Flyers
laid out than opponents; Primeau, Umberger, Lindros, Johnsson, Etc... This
is the first big hit than I've seen in a while that required a stretcher for
an opponent - please correct me if I'm wrong on this one.

It stops when the remove the instigator penalty. The players will police
themselves.

I'm sure you could argue that there would be *more* violence but it's quite
possible that we would see less. Players would be held accountable to each
other and have to be prepared to pay the piper for dirty hits.
