Archived from groups: rec>sport>hockey>field (more info?)

Some while back in this newsgroup, I believe, a statement was made by
someone that field hockey was, at least at one time, the second most popular
MEN'S sport in the world. I can well believe that after many years spent
monitoring this ng :) but now I'd like to know if that has ever been
documented anywhere? vs just being someone's opinion? I expect that soccer
is probably #1, but I'd be curious to know if anyone has ever seen any kind
of stats to support FH being #2? If it still is, of course, or at least
where it might fall in such a list.

I realize full well it's not very popular here in the US for *men*, which I
strongly believe is a huge pity, but to settle an argument with a friend :)
I'd really like to get some kind of "ammunition" to prove my point that it
truly is as popular in the rest of the world as I believe it is.

Thanks!

a quick search of google reveals you've been looking for an answer to
this question for a long time.

i reckon the best comments from previous versions of this discussion
were posted on 30 Nov 1997 by Jack Bramah. "In the U.S. more men are
bitten annually by poisonous snakes than play hockey." and "Oh God, not
this one again. For a full and framk [sic] discussion which comes to no
conclusions except that people define "popular" in different ways"

But more play hockey than are documented by any reliable source. I mean.....I
know it's not documented that 35 boys (6-12) are playing hockey on an almost
daily basis (when there isn't snow on the turf) in Ashton, Maryland.

Don't even remember asking this before! If I did, I guess I'm still looking
'cause I never got a response before :)

I was just trying to pass on responses to my daughter who was having a
friendly discussion on this with a Canadian friend :) We know full well that
FH in the US is virtually unplayed by men, comparatively speaking, and no
offense to those who do, but my question was about other parts of the
"world", where it is far more popular. We were just wondering HOW popular it
is, and in fact, there is a rousing discussion of this at George's site
where I also posted this question THIS year :) Sorry, LAST year now :)
