Dunno how you guys would live with that one, I remember when Doug Gilmour
signed with the Habs there was some screaming...

I don't remember it, probably because Gilmour was long past being effective
when he signed with Montreal and likely didn't have other options. Sundin
would be a different situation and don't think there is a chance in hell but
it doesn't hurt to ask. Gainey can use his sad puupy dog eyes to try to
sell Mats on the idiocy of going to the Canadiens but I doubt it will
happen.

Just out of curiosity, how would going to a storied franchise that's in
great position to compete for the Cup the next few years be deemed "idiocy"?
If it's because you hate the Habs, I understand the disdain for the
potential move, but you gotta figure Mats heading to a contender would be
the only shot he would have at a Cup in his career now, because I can't see
the Leafs winning it soon.

I remember the Toronto Sun headline, "Say it aint so, Dougie", when he
signed, and some general pissed-offedness from my Leaf fan friends that one
of their favourite all-time Leafs was signing with their biggest rival.
That's the screaming I am referring to, as I wasn't dabbling in usenet at
the time (did they even have a usenet at that time?)

I wouldn't be surprised if Sundin dislikes the Canadiens just as much as any
Leafs fan and having played for Toronto for so many years he knows the
impact of such a decision. He'd be a lightning rod for the media and a
sideshow and top of it all would look absolutely nauseating in that uniform.
Besides, the Canadiens aren't a contender without Sundin and effective
goaltending ("high to the glove side!).

I wouldn't mind that much seeing Mats go to the Habs, although I'd
prefer he go somewhere where he could win the cup. I suppose you
always think the last two cup finalists are bound to dominate the next
year but this time It's hard to imagine that Pittsburgh and Detroit
won't be major forces again next year. I just hope the Leafs get
something more than token for him.

It's odd motivation though, I mean part of his reason for not waving
his NTC last year was guys like Salming saying how they regretted not
finishing their career with the Leafs. Given that he never took them
to the cup, Sundin retrospectively has probably hurt the Leafs for the
next few years more than we could possibly know. If he let himself
get traded last year it would have meant more players from the trade
itself, better draft position (if not number one) and more waving of
the other no-traders leading to even more picks. I mean, it's
hypothetical obviously, but the potential gain that could have been
reaped last year could have set the Leafs up for the next decade.
It's enough to maybe make you cry. But whatever, I mean, you still
have to respect his decision, it's just it would be sweet if he let
himself get signed and traded now to make up for it. If he does go to
the Habs I hope the compensation irks them.
