I almost fell off my sheep when I heard Gillis talking about who
he'd pick in the 10th spot. He suggested it wouldn't be a D because
they are strong in that position, then said it would be the best player
who had intelligence, integrity and character [ we have to get a name
for that mantra ]. And he added, there might be a pretty good goaltender
available at that spot. WTF ?

The thing about drafting a good goaltender is two-fold: You can always
use a good goaltender. Current goalie meltdown is never far from a
possibility, I don't care how solid he may appear to be. ALSO, draft a
decent goaltender, nurse him just the right way, and watch him become
very useful in trade negotiations when you want to pry a big name
forward from another team. This is why you always consider drafting a
goaltender. Now, considering the Canucks need help in other areas NOW
and said goaltender's future ability to be trade bait is a ways off,
it does seem to be an odd strategy. BUT how realistic, really, is it
that anyone ready to play now would still be available by the 10th
pick? 10 aint bad, though, but we'll have to see what's available...

You speak Gillese. There *might* be a pretty good goaltender at the
#10 spot. Also some pretty good defencemen and forwards. He's not
saying anything. You falling off your sheep would have been an
incidental benefit.

He could also just be blowing smoke up the rears of the teams drafting ahead
of him.

I believe that is now one of Smyl's "expanded duties." That and
reordering the media popcorn.

But to what purpose ? What Gillis does has no influence on what the teams
ahead have already done.

True. Thinking about it more, it would more likely be smoke intended for
someone behind the Canucks, who might get nervous and trade up thinking they
might not get a chance at the goaltender they have targeted. Heck, either
way he's better off lying to the media about what the Canucks are thinking
of doing. I don't think any team in the draft really wants to tip their
hand.

Yep, but I don't think there's the slightest chance he'd draft a goalie with
that pick. I think he just used the opportunity to mention a goalie as another
opportunity to promote his mantra..........see, if a player has integrity, IQ,
and character we'll take him, even if he was a goalie.

Cheat a bit and substitute knowledge for intelligence, and we
can go with ICK.

" We'll go with the player who has the best ICK. "

I like it :-)
