It looks the the Blackberry billionaire is going to buy the Predators
and move them to either Hamilton or the Kitchener triangle. Great
news!
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CP) - Craig Leipold, the owner of the Nashville
Predators, confirmed Thursday that he has entered into a letter of
agreement to sell the NHL franchise to Waterloo, Ont., businessman Jim
Balsillie for US$220 million.
"This is truly one of the toughest days of my life," said Leipold. "I
poured my heart and soul into this franchise for 10 years."
The sale must be closed by June 30. Approval before that date from the
NHL's board of governors would be required.
Attendance at Predators home games in 2006-2007 averaged just over
13,500 - 2,000 below the NHL average, even with some of the lowest
ticket prices. The team amassed 110 points - third-best in the league
- but still lost US$15 million.

Details on Predators lease agreement
"It's time to give someone else the chance to take the Nashville
Predators to the next level," Leipold said during a news conference.
Leipold predicted that "we'll have hockey here for a long time" if
attendance improves. A default clause in the team's arena lease can be
triggered June 19 to give one-year notice of departure if attendance
remains below 14,000 during the 2007-2008 season.
"I have come to the conclusion I can not make it work here," said
Leipold. >> Stay informed about: Great News!! Bye-Bye Nashville |

Exactly, they can't even draw 14000 fans, the NHL let teams move out
of
Winnipeg and Quebec that drew more than that.

The dollar is valued at $.92 US right now, exchange is no longer a
problem
and will not be for the forseeable future. Supposedly Mr.Blackberry
bought
a bunch of land in the tri-city area just last week and the beauty of
him
moving to that location is that he does not infringe upon Toronto's or
Barfalo's territorial rights. Economically that area is on fire.

Nashville was an interesting experiment, but ultimately a failure. One
down,
two more to go, once we get teams back in the 'peg and Quebec all will
be as
it should be. >> Stay informed about: Great News!! Bye-Bye Nashville |

I hope you are not being sarcastic - as I agree it is great news.
Nashville is not hockey. You know this is coming but part (very small
part) of me is happy to see the ducks in the SCF without Kariya - as the elf
ran out on the ducks for pennies when he was the captain. If the duck
win - a big IF - knowing Kariya was denied will be justice. >> Stay informed about: Great News!! Bye-Bye Nashville |

Because it stands to reason that a Canadian market would be much more
receptive to an NHL team than Nashville, TN. Whether the exchange rate and
the various economic whatnots cooperate I don't know, but the fanbase will
be infinitely better. And it's better for hockey as a whole IMO when the
NHL has a stronger presence in Canada.

Maybe they'll be in the Northeast division and all five arenas can share the
same parking lot. >> Stay informed about: Great News!! Bye-Bye Nashville |

Well other than the obvious - the Canadian population would know more than
one cheer and also not be subjected to the financially draining "bring you
sister and your wife gets in free" nights...think about it a bit... >> Stay informed about: Great News!! Bye-Bye Nashville |

Ah, that part. Can't argue with that. I thought maybe he just didn't like
the Preds.

Thinking of Memphis and the Grizzlies, there *is* a kind of poetry to the
situation.

Well, it's good, real good. Would be better if it were somewhere not
Ontario, but it's a start.

Maybe it'll be one small step away from futzing around with the playoff OT
format!

$50 says that there's an NHL team in Nashville 5 years from now.

WTF are you talking about? The Avs had the longest sellout streak in NHL
history, and the first season in a decade in which they didn't sell out
all 41 games, they still averaged over 17,600 people a game.
