Henrik to get some help??

http://www.nypost.com/seven/01132008/sports/rangers/its_about_time__905508.htm

Speaking of which, Don Meehan, the agent for Curtis Joseph, told The
Post that Ranger GM Glen Sather has inquired about the 40-year-old
unsigned free-agent goaltender.

Meehan met with the GM here yesterday to begin work on contract
extensions for both Lundqvist and Dan Girardi.

"Glen asked about Curtis, but I'm not certain that he's prepared to
move on anything at this moment," Meehan said during the first
intermission.

"I'm not sure with Curtis' timetable that there's a lot of time,
though, if they are interested in moving forward."

Joseph, who led Canada to the championship of the international
Spengler Cup tournament late last month and who played three seasons
for Sather's Oilers in the mid-'90s, is being aggressively pursued by
Calgary.

The Blueshirts' interest in Cujo - to whatever degree it exists - is
not a commentary on Lundqvist's recent issues. Rather, it reflects
interest in bolstering the back-up role that's been held by Steve
Valiquette since last February.

"I'm quite sure Henrik would see that as an attempt to strengthen the
team, not as an indication of lack of faith in him," Meehan said.

If he's actually being "aggressively" pursued, I don't see how he'd fit
under the cap.

I don't think Valiquette has been bad.

He's 2-3-1. He's given up a couple of soft goals but you can't really
pin the losses on him.

How much money could he asked for? An agent ploy to put pressure on
Calgary or the Rangers? How much are 10 starts worth for a guy who's
out of hockey right now and who's best years are past him?

Question - Valliquette or an under the cap- 40yo - Cujo?
Either one raise your confidence?

Why wouldn't Montoya be an option if Henrik goes down?

As for not shaking his funk, we're riding Lundqvist regardless.

As an emergency call-up due to an injury, I don't think there are
significant cap issues. Montoya doesn't have to pass through waivers
to come up.

As for whether he's ready, if Lundqvist goes down, we'll find out.

I think Valliquette and Montoya are adequate insurance policies.

But regardless of who is the backup, we're screwed if we need them to
step up.

Well, I don't really think Valliquette is any good. I think he'd be
sufficient on some nights if the team in front of him plays very well. But I
think he'd outright lose more games than he'd win. I have no idea if Cujo
would be a better option in reality. But it's a possibility. If it wasn't a
cap liability and it was only a contract for this season, I'd be fine with
them taking a chance on Cujo. Couldn't hurt.

But to answer your question, neither raises my confidence too much in the
case that Lundqvist can't perform. For a backup that you can depend on now
and again, I'd probably feel more comfortable with Cujo. Although,
Valiquette has been ok at times. But I have a heart attack whenever the puck
comes anywhere near him.

I agree. Nothing against Valliquette, because he seems to be a real
team player who understands that his role will always be backup no
matter where he is, but I think there's a lot of benefit to having
veteran experience as a backup role in such an important position.

In his last two starts, I think the team in front of him has played
really well (Toronto win and Vancouver loss). I guess you have to
consider whether you want Lundqvist to have Brodeur numbers in terms
of starts or not. I simply CAN NOT imagine the team playing that well
in front of him very often. I guess it's all a gamble in the end.

I guess in other words, if Henrik goes down or can't shake his funk,
who (Valiquette or Cujo) would you rather have in relie if Montoya is
not an option.

Clearing waivers and such? Cap reason? Not ready? Unproven at this
level?

>As for not shaking his funk, we're riding Lundqvist regardless.

No doubt. This is not about replacing Lundqvist instead more or less
who's better insurance, a 40 yo Cujo or Valliquette. I'm guessing you
think Valliquette is adequate.
