I've been out in the sticks in Idaho, not hearing a word of news for 5
days, and the Sharks have gone nuts. I'll try to digest it all and
read over the posts tomorrow.

Yeah, same here. I went away to Disneyland all of last week (no tv, news,
etc. -- it was nice, actually) and get back late Friday to find this flurry
of action has taken place.

Here's a nice, although pessimistic, summary:

That article is an accurate summation and just confirms the obvious:
all the eggs are in the "now" basket, and the Sharks either find some
way to bring home the bacon, or there's going to be several long, cold
winters down the road, with a cupboard bare of Stanley Cups.

I still rigorously maintain that without a big trade up front, Boyle's
not nearly enough.

Even the greatest defense will get you only a 0-0 tie unless you have
people to put the puck in the opposition net! I agree that we will
still see another blockbuster trade involving forwards.

Owen Nolan signed a two-year pact with Minnesota. Too bad, the Sharks
could have used him, He's in the same mold as Roenick - gritty.

I'm thinking we might see a minor trade or two, at least to dump McLaren's
salary, and some RFA signings, but that the team is almost set. They are
close to the cap, when considering what it will take to sign Ehrhoff and
Clowe, so unless you believe they will dump Michalek, and I don't, I think
they are just about done.

The structure of Blake's salary is important, as it gives them a cushion for
next season, when it will be even more difficult to sign everyone. That is
when they may well have to dump a prime forward due to the cap. This year,
they are going for it.

Even though they are close to the cap, a blockbuster can happen if
salary totals match on both sides of the trade.

I'm surprised that the Sharks didn't try to grab him. He has exactly
the type of playoff performance potential that this team needs. Was he
a free agent or did Minnesota give something up? And how much is he
making?

I thought he signed for 2.75M per year, 2 year contract. At any rate, the
Sharks can't afford him and sign Ehrhoff and Clowe (and Goc, I suppose).
Apparently, they have a deal for clowe, and only the term is not set. But
with just $5m to the cap, they can't afford a forward at that rate.
