What is going on?

Statement from the Kessel Family

12/11/2006

BOSTON, MA - The Kessel family has asked the Boston Bruins to release
the following statement:

Phil Kessel is being treated today for a medical issue not related to
hockey.

At this time there is no further update on Phil's condition. When
there is an update, and it is appropriate to do so, we will update
everyone on Phil's health.

We kindly ask that you respect the Kessel family's privacy during
this time.

I say rehab.... young kid couldn't handle the high profile life of
playing hockey in the "Hub"

Either that or I'm just looking for a big grand story to talk about!

I hope he's back soon..

Haven't been able to dig up anything but speculation as of yet...whatever it
is people are keeping pretty mum about it.
I hope to hell the kid's okay.

Considering Boston's bad luck with young players, I hope its only
rehab.

Niiiiiice speculation. :-P

ESPN saying sources confirm "nothing nefarious" as in drugs or booze.

I've read that pompous ass himself (Pierre M) says it is a disease and
curable, but won't reveal anything.

Report on a local blog had it as ball cancer but that reports been
removed.

This blows. Reeks of Len Bias to me. Lennie died from the nose candy,
but he was a highly touted draft pick and the "savior" of a franchise.
I hope like hell Kessel gets healthy and can play again. Barring that,
just get healthy and live. I hate seeing younger people in the prime
of their lives get sick with something so unexpected.

First thing I thought of was Jon Lester.

Lester came to mind too. I was mainly thinking of the "savior" factor
and the kind of punch to gut feeling I got today when I first read the
reports. Like many other Boston scene fans, I was on the parade routes
in the 80's and I can still remember picking up the Globe the next day
and seeing the headline.

The B's will survive this season without Kessel if it turns out that
way, but it casts a pall over the next several if it doesn't.

On a radio show this afternoon in Montreal, Pierre McGuire stated that the
situation is serious but has been asked to keep it confidential. The only
thing he eluded to is that it is a medical issue.

I hope the doctors can get to the bottom of this so that Phil can get on and
lead a normal life.

I heard on the news last night that Kessel has testicular cancer. No
more has been said other than that he is in good sprits and will be
undergoing surgery either today or tomorrow.

Thankfully I guess this is a very treatable form of cancer and the
success rate of treating it is very high. Putting aside his hockey for
a moment I can see how this could be devastating to a 19 year old.
Hopefully he'll be able to recover and get his life back on track.
