it's 13-0 with Canada on the PP with 5 minutes left. Quinn puts out
Tavares and the rest of the first unit. I find that in bad taste. It's
now 15-0...

What a great perspective. I hope they do feel that way. On the
radio, it was said that they have only 20 players on their squad,
because there were only 50-odd kids to choose from and many of them
were left home for being too small (and this a team with a 130-pound
goalie).

I assume there are 8 teams in this tournament. If the Kazaks, with
their 50 players is eighth best, what does that say about world
hockey?

I'm thinking it says: if the Chinese national sports programme decides
to excel in men's hockey, look out in about two decades!

I think there are double that. I also agree with the talking heads that
it should go back to 8 teams until the world catches up.

They're trying to win a tournament with players that have little
experience playing together. I see nothing wrong with keeping the
pressure on while learning each other's habits. Further, goal
differential can be a factor in these tournaments.

What's more disturbing, Canada actually lost to Khazakstan in the late
90's (if I recall) in their worst showing ever at the tournament.

Plus at the time they had a 7 min PP. Quinn did keep his #1 unit with
Hodgson and the big T off subsequently.

I was paying attention from the 3rd goal on to see if Quinn mentioned to the
boys not to show them up by over-celebrating their goals. They shut down
almost all celebration from the 5th goal on.

An inneresting moment for Canuck fans occurred on Hodgson's second goal.
He took a nice pass on a 2 on 1 and buried it. Immediately Subban rushed to
him to celebrate and give him a hug. Before Subban got to him, COHO subtley
motioned him off and just pointed to the guy who made the pass. They then
in a reserved manner went over to the passer and gave him a low-key pat.

What was inneresting, was not that a player who scores off a great play by a
teammate will point to the playmaker to give props, but that Subban reacted
like he was tasered as soon as COHO waved him off. It was Alpha dog making
his wishes clear, and Subban obeying.

To mangle all my metaphors, maybe this kid does have the Royal Jelly ?

Way back when they were still in training camp, there was some speculation
Quinn might pick Hodgson to wear the C. That he doesn't wear any letters
probably just means there are more suitable leaders on this team, but still
doesn't change the fact that Cody was highly regarded enough to have been
considered. Based on his play in the pre-tournament and the first two games,
I don't think Hodgson would have looked out of place if he had been given
the captaincy.

I wouldn't say he has royal jelly, more like salmon roe? (coho...get
it?...bah screw you all...)

Excellent point. It appears only six countries (Canada, US, Finland,
Sweden, Czech/Czechoslovakia, and Russia/USSR/CIS) have won the World
Juniors. Only two other teams (Slovakia and Switzerland) have even
medaled.

Turning to the Olympics adds only one team to the collection of winners
or medalists, Great Britain (Bronze in 1924, Gold in 1936), though the
1992 gold was won by the "Unified Team" which was more or less Russia
plus a bunch of former Soviet republics.

Excellent point. The old East German model was to focus on sports where
individuals competed, because was felt you got more medals for the same
amount of effort and funding. The Chinese athletic model does seem to
owe some fealty to maximizing Olympic medals as well.

No, it was to focus on sports where cheating was at it's most profitable.
