Coates was the odd-ballest coach to win a Cup with Montreal.
He spent the last six years with the Ducks and eleven years with
Fletcher. He leaves a job where he was Senior Advisor to the GM ...
which is what Toronto talked to Nonis (and Armstrong) about. The
hiring could be labeled incestuous. ... I wonder if he phoned
Scotty for advice ... So who gave the Leafs get permission to talk
to him, BB?
Interesting wrinkle to the move - Penny takes a demotion and goes
west, his replacement comes from the west. Maybe the Leafs just
wanted to know who Anaheim is picking. >> Stay informed about: Leafs Hire Al Coates |

You're thinking of Al McNeil who coached the Canadiens and worked for the
Flames.
Apparently not one of Burke's guys anyway, inherited from the previous
regime so not much connection there and wasn't involved with amateur
scouting. >> Stay informed about: Leafs Hire Al Coates |

Anyone want to take a leap and predict that as soon as Burke signs on
with the Leafs that Ducks ownership cries Fowl and utters the
"tampering" word?
No.
