'Amid speculation that the Penguins were about to send Ryan Malone to
a Western Conference team for a player and/or draft pick, Malone's
agent signaled last night that his client was not interested in such a
deal and that Malone would rather wait to become an unrestricted free
agent July 1. The Columbus Dispatch reported yesterday that the
Penguins were going to trade Malone's right to Columbus, Vancouver or
Minnesota. But Malone's agent, Mike Liut, suggested that a team
trading for his client might end up empty-handed if Malone chooses not
to sign.'

This would be a good power forward that the Habs need. From what I
have read he will command $5 mil per for 5 years - so the question is
- is he worth it? Keep in mind that power forwards are far and few
between.

The only way hes gonna get the kind of $$ he wants is if he signs with
a team like Columbus - if he was smart he would sign for less and win
a cup with the pens.

No way is he worth it. Not to us, anyway. Even if we do need a power
forward-y type of player.

That said, I totally expect he will get it, somewhere. The NHL is
crazy. He played well in the playoffs, though, and he showed well in
two areas that teams will like: crease-crashing and penalty killing.
He was pretty solid and multi-dimensional, so even if he struggles to
score 20 goals away from the Pittsburgh big guns, he still brings
something.

It's either a bit classy to the rest of the league that he warned them
off trading for his rights, or a bit of a burn to the Pens for
lowballing him. Now they get nothing for him. Malone has had his
reputation for a while for being something of a wild boy, so that
would also factor into his unsuitability for our team IMHO.

We have Latendresse, we have Pacioretty coming. If we can't sign a PF
in the meantime, we have those fallback options to keep working on
internally.

You're talking about a guy who has only hit 50pts once and after only
getting 31 the year before last was almost run out of Pittsburgh... He's
way too unproven to give that kind of cash to. right now he's making 1.45
I could see going to 2 maybe 2.25 not 5 mill a year.

2.25 a year for 2 years with options and incentive bonuses built in.

Apparently Langkow already has his deal worked out with the Flames but
they can't make it official until either the new cap raise is
announced or the 10% overrun window opens up on July 1st. Or
something like that.

He might be a little bit redundant with Koivu. But he's a good player
and I'd probably want him on my team anyway, even with a bit of
redundancy. He's intense.

I'd rather BG look at RJ umberger after the way he burned the Habs in
the 2nd round - but he's RFA.

Waht about Langkow?

Not like anyone is going to give up much of anything anyways. What did
Philly get for Prospal, a 7th round draft pick? I guess they could
send a signal to players they do not intend to bid on by trading their
own UFA for another team's UFA for a chance for an early shot at
signing him. If they do not sign who they traded for, nothing is
really lost if you shipped them a player you were losing anyways.

Personally I think Keith Tkachuk would look great in rouge bleue et

Wonder why no one was calling Gainey to get at Streit and Ryder early?

I would think that these things may go like this;

GM calls BG and says; "I am willing to give you a x-y or z round pick
for the rights to x-y or z, can you ask x-y or z if they would be
interested in negotiation and signing with us?"

BG asks x-y or z (And/or his agent), and they say "Hell no! I will
test the waters" or "Hell no, cant stand that city" or "Sure! Make it
happen!".

This is assuming BG has no real plans of actually signing x-y or z.

So I think that it is quite possible that a GM or two got BG to talk
to x-y or z (Mark Streit would be the only one I think that would be a
likely subject to such a call), and either BG is still trying to get a
deal done with x-y or z, or x-y or z said no. I would doubt that BG
would say no to any draft pick offered for any player that he has no
intention of signing. (See; Huet, Cristobal)

Don't forget, this type of thing takes more than BG saying yes. There
has to be some sort of possibility that x-y or z would say yes to what
ever the prospective GM is offering.

That's just my cracker-jack hypothesis.
