Im quite puzzled why this guy gets so much promo about his leadership
qualities. He hung around too long, maybe 5-6 years and to me he is a self
promoter about his leadership skills. From what I remember he took the
captaincy away from Linden in Vancouver and split the dressing room apart
there. Bourque wouldnt take the "C" from Sakic. Plus all this dumbass
monthly leadership award from cold-fx,seems to me players are embarrarased
to take it.
To me real leaders are guys like Sakic,Bourque, Yzerman who dont seek out
the acclaim but fully deserve it. Messier is a self promoter >> Stay informed about: Messier |

No. It's not necessarily the case that the best player is not the
best leader. In Gretzky's case, he was the leader. In Bobby
Clarke's case, he was both the team's best player and their leader.
In the case of Orr, Howe, LaFleur, and others, who were never team
captains, they were not leaders. But if Orr and Howe played now,
they would be named team Captains simply because they were the best
players.

For a fun time go into alt.sports.hockey.nhl.vanc-canucks and make a post
lauding Messier as a great leader. >> Stay informed about: Messier |

Don't know anything about his muscles, but that jaw of his denotes
stupidity and nothing else, to us.

You're right that he was one of the leaders. Along the same vein,
the leader on those Sittler/McDonald/Salming Leaf teams was Tiger
Williams. Williams, himself, used to enforce curfews during the
playoffs.
