Well, its not totally unexpected.
What chance the NHL and NHLPA can sit down and get the CBA all sorted
out before the next season is due to start...
As it is, this will be the first time a north american sport has
missed a full season due to work stoppage.

No. From what I understand, the season started, and then the players
walked out part way through. At the time of the players strike,
apparently Montreal Expos were favourites to get to the post season
and win the world series.

Correct.

They were probably favourites to win the NL East; the rest is somewhat a
matter of conjecture.
