| I saw some extended highlights on the NHL Network of the Russia-
Finland Match at Quebec City with Nabokov playing goal for Team
Russia. He made some truly spectacular clutch saves, the likes of
which were not seen at all in the cup playoffs. Too bad he couldn't
have played at this rarefied level for the Sharks; they might still be
playing if he had.

What you should be saying is, too bad all the guys in front of him
couldn't have some played hockey, even at half his playoff level.
Half of the time, they barely showed up, and even when they did they
were just average and wholly ineffective in scoring.
Nabokov makes truly acrobatic, remarkable saves at times, saves other
goalies couldn't hope to match in athleticism. We see them so often,
we now expect every save to look like that or every goal-against to
have been saved like that. The guy is usually in brilliant position
and has great lateral movement, so most of the time he can make his
own play look routine.
This finger-pointing at Nabokov, even the slightest suggestion that HE
was the cause of yet another perrenial Sharks' demise, is just plain
silliness. >> Stay informed about: Nabokov at World Chmpionships |

If you didn't see some jaw-dropping saves in the playoffs then you
didn't watch a number of the Sharks games. >> Stay informed about: Nabokov at World Chmpionships |

At least he won something this year:
After looking a tad shaky through the first two periods, Russian goalie
Evgeni Nabokov came up huge for the Russians down the stretch by repeatedly
stoning the Canadian snipers. He was named the top goaltender of the
tournament.

Of course Nabokov wasn't the cause of the Sharks' early exit. He
played at a level sufficient for a genuine cup winning team and cannot
in any way shape or form be blamed for the Sharks' lackluster play
resulting in their being beaten by Dallas. However, he definitely,
for whatever reason, was playing at a higher, almost superhuman level
at the World Championships, a level at which if he had been at during
the Cup games, he might have stolen a few games for the Sharks,
perhaps resulting in their survival into the next round. I didn't at
all mean to imply that he was to blame for their defeat. >> Stay informed about: Nabokov at World Chmpionships |
