Capitals' Nylander breaks leg
October 3, 2003
ODENTON, Md. (AP) -- Washington Capitals center Michael Nylander will
be sidelined four to six weeks with a broken right leg, ending his streak of
310 consecutive games.
Nylander's leg was broken near the ankle during practice Thursday when
he was checked against the boards by Nolan Yonkman.
``Nolan Yonkman is fighting for a position on our team and playing
hard,'' coach Bruce Cassidy said. ``And Nylander is a competitive guy as
well. There's not much you can do about it. Sometimes this happens.''
Nylander, who turned 31 Friday, had been centering the top line with
Jaromir Jagr and Mike Grier during much of training camp. He was acquired
from Chicago last November and had 17 goals and 39 assists in 71 games with
the Capitals.
