With all the ballyhoo over Ovechkin, I decided to look at his stats. Over
the last 3 years with Moscow Dynamo he has 23 goals and 42 points in 114
games. This works out to about 16 goals and 30 points in an NHL season. He
also had no points in 8 playoff games. These are pretty anemic numbers for
an overall #1 selection to say the least.

But you are talking about a 15-18 year old kid (last three years) playing on
the 3rd and 4th lines of the most powerful team in Russia. Would be similar
to a 10th grader joining the Caps and becoming a contributor. Put this guy
on a line with other top players and he will put up more numbers, IMO.

This kid was the consensus top player in the draft field.
McPhee was flooded with calls about trading the top selection, and
received three legitimate offers, but the experts all say Ovechkin
is a prospective franchise player.

Fox sports is calling him "The total package. A skilled power
forward who plays on both sides of the puck. Has the right
personality to be a star."

Ovechkin was the top-rated European skater by the NHL's Central
Scouting department. He was praised by scouts for his speed, size
and stickhandling as well as his willingness to jump back on
defense and land checks.

I wish we could have gotten two of him, but it doesn't sound like
there were two available.

Perhaps, but I've heard alot of comparisons of Ovechkin to Jagr when he was
drafted. I think that may be somewhat of a stretch. Jagr, in his prime,
could dominate a game by himself. I'll be very surprised if Ovechkin is
another Jagr.

was second in goals on his team this season, at the age of 18.
His numbers are quite similar to those of Mogilny, Bure, Kovalchuk and
better
than Fedorov's were, when they were at his age playing in Russia. Plus he's
said to be good defensively and have a very good character.
Gonna be a great player, certainly much better than 16 g 30 p per season.

btw: Hedmann's a steal!

I hope he isn't, the caps don't play the right game for a defensively
inept, lazy, emotionally unstable, spoiled primadonna to excell.

Plus that would be a let down in a sense... there were multiple
instances in the press saying that Ovechkin was the best prospect to
enter the draft since Mario, i don't know if that will turn out to be
true but we'll all be watching something special if AO turns out to live
up to that kind of hype.

as for his russian numbers, keep in mind that the russian elite league
is proffesional, and he was a teenager.

Just wondering....

I keep hearing about all these stars in the Elite League and that AO is
playing third or fourth line. If that's so, why isn't the NHL drafting all
kinds of guys above him, who apparently have more skills and impact than he
does? Let's face it, NHL owners, for all the talk of development and
futures, are here-and-now guys, and if there are three centers playing above
him, why aren't they here?

How can you think of The Washington owners as "here and now" after
trading away all of our "here and now" players last year in
exchange for the future? What makes you think the guys playing
above Ovechkin are FUTURE stars, as opposed to established players
with a limited future?

Hey, there are 29 other clubs that draft and sign players. And, the NHL
teams sign guys all the time, sometimes for mere weeks ("rentals") before
they become free agents at the end of seasons. My point was that is
Ovechkin is a budding superstar, one might think that there would be NHL
teams happy to have the guys playing above him, even if for one or two
seasons.

P.S. The Caps have never shown aptitude in building a winner, whether
signing established players or drafting young ones.

The Russian Super League has veterans who used to play
in the NHL. It should not surprise anyone when they start at lines 1 and 2
over an 18 year old rookie. (Directed towards group)

AHHHHH. The positive attitude musings of Tack...makes one wonder if he is a
caps sabetour. But, in this case you are wrong. The caps have had some
great players they have drafted, they just did not feel like paying them
money when the time came. (ABE POLLIN.)

Jagr may not have been the most dedicated defensive player but I've rarely
seen a guy who was a basket-hanger more than Mario. As for spoiled
primadonna, I couldn't think of a more apt description for Mario. I watched
many a game where Jagr took tons of hits and physical abuse without a peep
while the second Mario was touched he whined, took a slash at the guy who
hit him and started looking around for the ref.

Lemieux was definitely a great talent but he was the most protected player
I've ever seen, either because of the refs or because of a reluctance on the
part of opponents to knock him on his ass. The only Caps game I remember
where he was knocked down was when Dave Poulin flattened him during a
playoff game. I do remember Todd Kreiger checking him and Lemieux chased
him around the ice until finally rabbit punching him from behind.

There was a game where a Cap got into a fight with Mario and Mario got
tossed...don't remember many details.
Mario was certainly one of the most apt to try and cheat his way to victory.

it was Bobby Gould during Mario's first year and Gould laid Mario out at
center ice

Ok, then I "think" there was ANOTHER one as I remember Mario getting into a
fight when he was already a Hall of Fame type player.

I looked it up. Got into a "Scrap" with Todd Kryiger...which was the one I
was thinking of.

Lemieux hadn't been ejected from a game for fighting since April 24, 1996,
when he mixed it up with Washington's Todd Krygier in Game 4 of the Eastern
Conference quarterfinals. Thursday's fighting major was his first in a
regular-season game since March 20, 1987 at Washington, when he tangled with
Bobby Gould.
