I honestly can not see any player that could be traded straight up for him
right now. His upside is one that can not be envisioned right now and in
the salary conscious NHL, he is a bargain. I do not know all the new rules
as to free agents and such but I hope the Caps can sign him long term once
his rookie contract is up in 2.5 years.

Obviously Domi was a joke, but the only player I might consider for him
straight-up would be Kovalchuk. If you haven't been watching any of ATL,
Kovalchuk is playing out of his mind right now, looks like he could have 4-5
goals each and every game. Which is kinda what Ovechkin looks like. Both
very young still. >> Stay informed about: Ovechkin... |

The problem I have with Kov, so far, is that his attitude has seemed a
little rough around the edges. I have seen Kov going crazy but a lynching
would occur if any trade of Ovy took place :-).
I am not sure I have ever seen Kov hit like AO does, as well.

Good points... honestly, depending on where my team was in it's
development, I don't think there is anyone in the NHL I would trade for
Ovechkin straight up at this point. The guy is on pace for 60 goals this
season with absolutely NO help. It is frightening to think what he could do
with a playmaking center and another solid scoring threat on his line. He
could get 80 goals in the right conditions, easily. And he is 20.
Think of the first-rate talent in this league right now all 25 or under.
Gagne
Kovalchuk
Spezza
Crosby
Nash
Svatos
Frolov
Phaneuf
Lundqvist, etc, etc
Great for the game! >> Stay informed about: Ovechkin... |

Yes, the proverbial "guard" is changing as to the talent in the league. I
would counter, on Ovy, that he may actually get less goals if on a better
team. The Dennis Maruk....Ovy is chasing the Capitals club record set by
Dennis Maruk...60 goals in 81-82. The Caps were under .500 that year and
did not make the playoffs. Though they had more talent then this team, for
that day and age, Maruk may have played too singularly at times, to make up
for the Caps lack of talent at that time.
In 85-86, the Caps got 107 points (their most ever) and their top goal
scorer only had 41 goals. In fact, that team scored 4 less goals then the
81-82 squad that finished with 65 points. Lots of variables in there as to
the game changing over that 5 year period but having high goal totals by one
player does not equate into wins, obviously. The Caps Stanley Cup team,
however, did have stats like that with Bondra having 52 and the next player
down having 18. However, that team was mediocre during the regular season
compared to the 85-86 teams (wins and points).
If Ovy were on a good team, he may look as good but get less goals as there
will be more players capable of scoring.

He'd probably get more assists, though, and easily be one of the top
point-scorers. >> Stay informed about: Ovechkin... |

Sure, agree with that...was more commenting on the chance of him getting
70-80 goals.
