I'm in Ottawa and I remember how much I enjoyed Don Chevrier calling Sens
games when they were just getting started (he used to partner with Millen
I think). But I remember him most way back in the 70's when, in my
opinion, he was the greatest CFL commentator ever. He had what my mother
used to call "the gift of the gab", and as you say, a wonderful voice for
sports broadcasting. He was a guy you couldn't help but like, even
though you didn't really know him, but it felt like you did. It's sad to
lose a guy like Don Chevrier. There are too few of these guys around
anymore...

I forgot about Shulman, he was indeed very good also.
To me though, Chevrier was the television voice of the Jays, just like Cheek
and Howarth were/are the radio voices. Now they are on their second
commentator trying to replace the late Tom Cheek.
The Blue Jays for me on TV were never the same after they decided to let go
Chevrier.

Adam:
If the "may he rest in peace anyhow" is referring to Fergie Olver....
I don't believe he is dead.

No, I just was sure I remember a news bit about him dying, but maybe
it was just him retiring. But I knew about Marsden, and Jim Hunt,
too.

Maybe the news media were just confirming that he's not dead yet, not
unlike they did with General Franco back in the '70's and Fidel Castro
presently? >> Stay informed about: RIP - Don Chevrier 1938 - 2007 |

We were living in Sudbury one year when Chevrier was doing a game
and he had Ferguson Jenkins in the booth as a guest. Sometimes the
Sudbury CTV affiliate didn't sell any local ads and during this time
they just kept monitoring the play-by-play booth. After all the
enthusiastic back-slapping for Jenkins, who was being honoured by
somebody around that time, you suddenly got to hear a really bored
and really rude Chevrier bitching to Jenkins about the length of the
game and the traffic. It was hilarious but we're sure that CTV
execs weren't all that thrilled that Chevrier didn't turn the mike
off.
Having said that, Chevrier, and Kubek, especially Kubek, gave the
Jays a truly professional broadcasting team right from the
beginning. The worst part of it was Fergy Olver. Remember him? He
was pathetic. Kubek was still doing the NBC saturday game with Joe
Garagiola and you had the feeling that the Jays were first class for
acquiring him.
cordially, as always,

that's not his job. a tech in the truck should turn the mike down. then
again, sometimes they don't, because of a need for the announcers to
communicate with the producers.
