You beat me to the punch! Wow. Let the wild speculation begin. The few
places I've seen mention of it didn't comment on the assistants, but
can we assume they are gone as well?

Whether RW bears responsibility for the Sharks' post season
problems the last few years or not, I am glad they let him lose.
Unless the Sharks won the cup RW was about at the end of his useful
life as the coach. For the first few years Darral Sutter, aka "bitter
beer face" was what an organization in disarray needed, however the
last contract deal San Jose gave him was a mistake. The Sharks had
gone as far as they were going to with Sutter. Maybe the Sharks could
get to the 3rd round with RW, maybe not, but it is apparent that the
organization needs changes so they might as well start now.

This is absolutely wonderful news, no matter what happens. By
maintaining the status quo they had no chance to have a shot at new
behavior, new style, new tactics, new anything. We already knew that
the current strategy/tactics/team demeanor was not getting the job
done, so a quest for improvement is needed and should be lauded.

I have no idea who they should hire, although I am always very worried
by NHL retreads. Quennville may be a candidate, but who knows if he's
the right guy.. The Capitals were bold and provided an opportunity for
an unknown. Likely, he's Coach of the Year.

Whoever they pick should be someone who's bold, aggressive and
demanding.

Furthermore:

Not to place the entire blame, in any respect, on Ron Wilson, there
are some players on this team that can't get sufficiently self-
motivated, nor inspired by Coach Wilson, apparently, to excel
consistently for themselves and for the team. If they can't get
motivated and aggressive, now that Wilson is gone, then they should be
given the door, and fast. And, that applies to any player, from first
line to part-timer.

Either want it, or find some other town with nice amenities.

I can't say that I have ever been inspired by the play of St.Louis or
Colorado under Quennville, so I wouldn't consider him. Unfortunately I
have no suggestion other than to survey all teams who play the proper
style and look at their assistants. Teams that immediately come to mind
are Detroit and Calgary.

Thanks for the link, and its not at all surprising. I wouldn't say its the
best news ever, but it clears the air, and a new guy can come in and try to
do better with this bunch. DW has made his choice, and he's probably keeping
the players, and letting the coaches go...

They should hire Gerard Gallant or Glen Hanlon.

I like this http://tinyurl.com/45yetj in that it promotes new guys. I
agree with the Keenan comments. What I don't like is the Granato/ex-
Sharks angle. This organization is way too incentuous, I'd like to see
an outsider with new ideas.

Dineen won coach of the year with the Portland Pirates a couple years
back. I think that's the type of guy they should look at.

Tend to agree that DW should not hire a "buddy." It's important to
maintain professional relationship, and it's easier to be more
demanding on an employee, rather than a friend.

Whomever is hired, it must be somebody who can command the players'
respect and discipline, no questions asked.

Too bad Scotty Bowman is retired. Or is he? Maybe he could be lured
back for the right offer. But I'm sure that offer would have to
include Doug Wilson's job, which would make the entire scenario highly
unlikely.

Think Bowman is still attached to Detroit, plus his sons live in
Chicago and he has his home sin Buffalo and Sarasota, so i don't
really think anything could raw him to the West Coast. Just not his
schtick.

Granato. No so bad, come to think about. Did well with a limited
opportunity. Sure, let's give him a shot.

For someone relatively young and fresh, how about former Shark John
MacLean. Currently, he is in his sixth year as an assistant coach for
the New Jersey Devils, one of the most successful organizations in the
NHL. He has two Stanley Cups under his belt, once as a player and once
as an assistant coach, both times with the Devils.

Definitely not a retread.
