Yep,
what was all that blowhard stuff about no older players, using the
pics to build a core ect. ect. ect. ... oh yeah, it was more TO
MSLE bullshit.
what a pointless move. We don't need a tough guy, there are no skill
players to protect!
Plus, he's got another year left after this one.. at 1.33 on the
cap.
Maybe he's supposed to transform into Gary Roberts because he's
playing for the home town crowd now?

You mean the one that got discombobulated on the season-ending goal?
Or a different one?
Nothing wrong with Jamal Mayers as a roster-stuffer at the deadline -
he's gritty and competitive. But acquiring him in an asset swap
that's supposed to do something ... like you and Z posted, I can't
even figure out what it's supposed to do. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |

It's not swallowable. Tucker's a better player and switch-plays the
other wing. The swap saves 800k for one year ... and then just costs
$1mil a year for five more years. Leafs don't have Florida's 3rd-
rounder - that was the pick they used to get Mayer. St. Louis turned
around and picked up Chris Mason for a 4th. So the Blues effectively
swapped defensive problems for defensive upgrade ... and moved up a
round in the draft. Leafs traded Kilger for Mayer. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |

The only angle I can find is that Mayers plus Tucker's buyout equals a
cheaper third line. I like Mayers, and the Leafs still have Florida's third
rounder... so at least it's swallowable. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |

And how did we acquire that third rounder... Chad Kilger. I'd take Kilger
over Mayers in a heartbeat. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |

The only possible rationale would be if you thought you could trade
Mayers at the 2009 deadline for a 2nd rounder. There are going to be
guys about as good as this available to sign before the season starts,
why waste a third round pick? Sure they have another one, but why
does that make any difference? Every pick is another pellet in the
shot gun. Short of getting something that is going to be there for
the 2012 playoff drive, there's no point in trading even an 8th round
pick for anything.
I would have liked this last year when there was this theoretical hope
that Blake was going to get 50 goals to go with Tucker's 40 and
Toskala was going to be a Vezina candidate. Now all I want are two or
three years of Penguins style consecutive top three picks and new
management. I want this to be like Episode IV. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |

Mayer's totals are about equal. His PIMs are about double, and his
minus is about 10x. A year of him isn't worth that 3rd rounder. Not
even close. This deal has that ... "Well I wannim" from an unnamed
owner look. >> Stay informed about: The First Shmaft |
