'cause here comes Joe Thornton!

Thornton is going to make a late charge for the scoring title and
now that Cheechoo is flying, he might just very well pull it off.
Last year, Jagr led the league in scoring for the entire year, until
just at the end when Thornton made his charge.

last 5 games:

thorton: 10 pts, + 8

leCavelier: 8 pts, - 2

crosby: 8 pts, + 1

must be nice to have "effectively disappeared" and still put up
numbers like that at 19 years old. nice work on the + 8 for big joe.

thorton is + 2 vs. sid in the last 5 with 10 to go. even if he's + 4
pts over the last 10 he'll still lose to sid. plus he feasted on CBJ,
PHX, CHI, EDM in 4 of those 5 games. sid played vs. NJD (twice), BUF,
MTL, NYR-- all teams fighting for playoff position-- in the same
span.

but since you're (all of you) so interested in comparisons how bout
this one:

at 19 years old:

joe thorton: 81 GP, 16 G, 25 A, 41 PTs, + 3

vinny: 80 GP, 25 G, 42 A, 67 PTs, - 25

crosby: 68 GP, 31 G, 75 A, 106 PTs, +10

despite 12 fewer GP sid has only 2 fewer points than thorton and vinny
had combined at 19 years old.

points per game:

lecavelier: 1.33

spezza: 1.32

thorton: 1.31

it's not even close.

You are an absolute goof! You rail in the rec.sport.baseball group about
the incessant stat geeks and how they have ruined baseball. Yet here you
are whining about personal statistical achievments of Sidney Crosby. Well
which is it? Is it about personal stats or winning as a team?

It's obviously about winning as a team. But the statfans in the
baseball group do not care about which team wins. They don't even
watch the games. All they do is drool over statbooks. These guys
don't even find out which teams win the WS until the baseball books
come out in time for Christmas and the winning team is mentioned,
incidently.

Aha! Cherry picked stats! And that doesn't mean that the stats
were picked by Don Cherry, although he could have picked them.

TSN has a feature that compares Gretzky at 19 to Crosby. At first,
Crosby's projected totals were quite close. Now those totals are
nowhere near Grezky's total of 137 points.

We sense that Crosby has been playing injured, or that the guys on
his lines aren't trying as hard as they used to try. Nonetheless,
Crosby hasn't been nearly as effective as he was a month ago.

The difference in our opinions lies in the fact that we objectively
critique Crosby's game, while you are simply a cheerleader with his
head to far up his ass to know anything about hockey.

IOW, bugger off.

these are the most recent stats available. but with your head up your
ass i guess you're cheerleading yourself into the usenet hall of fame.

sid is 14 points off gretzky's pace-- 137 to 123. now if i were
objective like you i guess i could point out that's not much different
than the 12 point lead sid has on thorton. of course as the king of
objectivity you see that as evidence of big joe surpassing crosby.
really logical. maybe

sounds about right.

yeah, that makes a lot of sense. you are oxymoronic.

why not the whole season? or doesn't that fit into your specious

Why the last 5 games? Why not the last 10? Or the last 6? Or the
last 23?

Wow. Your reasoning skills are like no other person we have seen on

Good question. And the answer is this: no player or team is able
to play at the same level, game after game, for an entire season.
It may well be that the player who is playing the best offensive
hockey right _now_ is not even among the scoring leaders. Likewise
the "best" team, as of right _now_, might not even be in a playoff
spot. How well the team plays in October does not inform us as to
how well that team is playing right _now._

Take, for example, the Washington/Tampa Bay game on right now. Is
TB better than Washington? Not today. It is 6-1 for the latter as
we write this. Which player in the game is the "best?" Ovechkin?
Lecavalier? St. Louis? Not today. Today the best player in that
game, and probably the NHL as a whole, is Alex Semin, who has a hat
trick in today's game.

The only way that we can determine which team or player is the
"best" is by looking at the results of the last game, and only the
last game.

10 games:

Crosby: 9 points, -2
Thornton: 16 points, + 12
Lecavalier: 14, -5

15 games:

Crosby: 18 points, -3
Thornton: 20 points, + 9
Lecavalier: 23 points, -5

20 games:

Crosby: 24 points, -2 ... 5 games against teams out of playoffs*... ponit
yield from said games: 3 points
Thornton: 29, + 8 ... 9 games against teams out of playoffs*... point yield
from said games: 16 points
Lecavalier: 30, -6 .... 11 games against teams out of the playoffs*... point
yield from said games: 17 points

*out of playoffs = more than 6 points out of 8th and final playoff spot

Total minus points from non-playoff teams*:

Crosby: 21
Thornton: 15
Lecavalier: 13
