Post subject: Sittler VS Sundin.
Archived from groups: alt>sports>hockey>nhl>tor-mapleleafs (more info?)

I watched last nights game on LeafsTV and was shocked how similar Sundin and
Sittler's stats were. They left out one telling stat though. Games played.
I don't want to take anything away from Mats accomplishment, because i truly
feel once he hangs them up in a few years he might be the best Leaf of all
time. However, statistically from my calculations (and i could be wrong on
these) Darryl is still ahead of him.

After last nights game:

Sundin has played 912 regular season games amassing 390 goals and 917 points
with the club.

Sittler played in 844 regular season games collecting 389 goals and 916
points.

So while Mats now holds the record for most points and goals, and soon
assists in the history of the club. Sittler was probably a more dominant
player for the Leafs. He did what Mats has done in 68 less games.

Just some thoughts.

Tunnel.

This is one of those statistics things that can be misleading. It's
difficult (but possible to attempt) to do a cross era statistical
analysis. You could look at things like average scoring per game
between eras, percentage of goals each player scored, quality of line
mates etc etc etc.

Things were just different then. Sundin played in the trap era with
30 teams, the both played on some good teams and some real bad ones.

What you pretty well end up with is a great subjective debate between
fans who are familiar with both eras.

Personally, I think it's a toss up.

While Sitler accomplished his record in fewer games....he also did it with
WINGERS on his line....There's No Way In Hell that you can compare Jonas
Hoglund with anyone that Sittler played with.....C'mon let's be honest
here...Sundin's points have mostly come while playing shorthanded 5 on
5...lol...The Only Time that SUNDIN ever had a winger was when Mogilny
played with the Leafs...and even then...Mogilny was past his prime....I've
always wanted and wondered just how productive Sundin would've been with a
pair of Decent Linemates...

Sundin had good linemates in Quebec and in Quebec he had 114 points
one season. Chances are that if he would have played with a good team
and had good wingers for all those wasted years then Sittler's records
would have been dusted a long long time ago.

As for Sittler versus Sundin: Sittler got all those points in less
games, but let us not forget that he was a streaky player. He scored
at least 300 of his goals in a single game against Boston and the rest
he stretched out over his career.

Could go the other way with that - Sundin played through some injuries
that could have ended another guy's season.

Yea, we've been there - Sundin, Sittler, Salming, Keon, Gilmour - hard
to knock anyone that picked one of those guys as the greatest-2-date.

Way more PIMs than Sundin, way more fights. The Sittler era teams
were generally better performers, while Sundin got the coverage
because he stood out on weak teams more often.

Sundin was the more dominant player, imo, because for stretches if you
stopped him the Leafs lost. Stopping Sittler had more ... room.

Sittler got to play with McDonald, Salming and Turnbull.

Sundin distinguished himself internationally much more than Sittler
ever did.

Mind you, Sittler played during a time which was a lot easier to score. The
90's and 00's with every player playing at a high level compared to the rest
of the league, that's gotta be the toughest time to put up points like that.
