Man, the kid looks good, doesn't he?
It's not just offense, either. Usually, a kid comes in and offense is
the first thing he does well, and it takes a long time for his defense
to come around. Anyone who remembers Yzerman's first five or six years
knows how putrid he was in his own end early on.
But man, this kid is a beast at both ends. I know he killed penalties
last year, but it was really nice to see him out there when Dallas had
pulled their goalie with a one-goal deficit late in the 3rd. That shows
that Q trusts him, and that's huge.
Obviously, it was just one game, but that Hlinka signing is looking even
better than I thought it would. I figured he'd be a more mature version
of Vrbata/Svatos - he'd be offensively gifted but non-physical and
defensively inept. But boy, he was playing solid defense tonight as well.
More importantly, if you didn't go into that game with any preconceived
notions about who was supposed to be a star or who signed for what, you
would have assumed that he was someone the Avs paid a load of money for.
Granted, he's not 19 years old, but he looked like he had been playing
in the NHL for a decade tonight.
Very excited about this team, and with good reason.
The defense *has* to play better. And it will.
I love Lappy as much as the next guy, and I realize he brings a lot to
the locker room. But the Avs can do without him. I'd much rather see
Svatos or Hensick out there than Lappy with Wolski and Arnason.

The Wings homers can crow about Zetterberg and Datsyuk all they want,
I wouldn't
trade Stastny straight up for either of those guys. I'll take money
from whoever would
like to bet that Stastny will put up more points than either of them
will.
As a Nords fan that watched his old man for so many years it really is
a trip
to see his kid show so much of the same skill as his old man. His
skating looks
to be better this year as well.

Again, I'll point to his bloodlines, his old man frequently did the
same for the
Nords. Its impressive that as a second year guy Q has that much faith
in
him. But let's not get carried away here, he's no Fillipul-ian Tube. >> Stay informed about: Stastny and Hlinka |

Then I hope you'll understand that you'd be hard-pressed to find Wings
fans who'd be willing to deal either of those guys for Stastny.
You really could do much worse than having any of the three of them.
And Stastny did look very good last night. Then again, so did Z.

At he very least, he's showing early signs of not Svatosing. >> Stay informed about: Stastny and Hlinka |

I would challenge you to tally Av vs. Wing prospect fellating around
here for the last decade and tell me if Wing prospects make up even
25% of the total.
Extra credit points if you manage to crash a Google server.
Looks like we're in for a season full of research projects.

He absolutely would not. He's a one-trick-pony/one-hit-wonder at this
point. Dan Cleary outproduced him last year playing with Kirk Maltby.
Stastny would look good on our top line, however. >> Stay informed about: Stastny and Hlinka |

He's a smallish, offensively-gifted player with good wheels who plays
lackluster defense. He tries hard to play good defense, but it doesn't
come naturally to him. He wants to play physically, but he ends up
getting mashed when he hits people who are bigger than he is. He has
been in Idiot's doghouse for the past year+, and he couldn't produce
last year with 4th line minutes and linemates. He'd be a 1st liner with
Detroit, and if he were given the minutes and offensively-gifted
linemates, he'd put up 30 goals like he did before.
That's as pragmatic as it gets.

Both players looked quite good tonight. Hlinka is very good with the
puck.

Leopold was easily the best one out there last night. He's quick.

Q is killing me with Svatos on the 4th line. Come on.

I live 15 minutes from Saginaw, so I'm taking those extra points.

I took two summer school courses there after my junior year at Douglas

I went the Detroit to Saginaw route, though I still wind up in Detroit
twice a week. As long as there are a few bucks left in that city, it
keeps drawing me back.

If there's a state I loathe more than Texas, I've yet to find it.
Except Austin. Austin's great. The rest of the state can cede back
to Mexico. First time I drove out of Bush Airport in Houston and
passed "Guitars & Guns", I knew I wasn't in Kansas anymore.

You wouldn't recognize it. It's like Flint or Detroit now, except
lacking their charm. I live up by Midland, which is night and day
from Saginaw. >> Stay informed about: Stastny and Hlinka |

Well that is where I am stuck since May and probably till Feb. Went to the
Austin City Limits two weeks ago....saw some great acts. I guess it is OK,
have not lived anywhere else in Texas but it was rain all the time this
summer - looks like the mold capital of the world. Everyone says the
same thing about Austin - it is a great place. Not to be a jerk but
after living in NYC everything seems a bit different - I know that sounds
pretentious as I was also a Lansing/Saginaw/Detroit kid. . People in Austin
are very friendly.....have a corporate apartment up in the northwest area by
the Arboretum - Mopac and 183. Nice area...

Sorry to hear that about Saginaw - had a great jr. high years there - hated
to move - parents pissed me off....my dad was over at Steering Geat many
many years ago then it was back to Detroit (Farmington area). Do you
work for Dow by any chance? The are the big show in Midland from what I
recall - and the six sigma references and a process industry - just a wild
guess. I think Delphi is also around there somewhere.... >> Stay informed about: Stastny and Hlinka |

Our band probably had the name Mysterians long before them but they had
it registered. When advertising went out for our show at the Greenlawn
Grove, we received a 'cease and desist" order. Technically, we were
wrong and changed our name to JC and the Apostles.

No way, not even close. Had nothing original, just covers for local
dances. Opened a few times for the MC5, their original drummer and
bassist were school mates of mine. I did one gig with Gary Thompson and
Tom Beaudry who went on to form Frigid Pink. All the good stuff happened
after I went into the Marines. Never quite got back in the groove after
that until recently. Just hauled the drums upstairs. Haven't played
seriously since the mid 80's.
