Surprised? In the end he chased the money, though the terms were not
released. One can only assume that they are taking the pro-rated 10-
million per year contract.

I thought the Rangers would pull it off, but they couldn't move any of
their duds.

Thank God we can put this to bed now.

Just in time for the Bouwmeester and Gaborik speculation to heat up.

I see 2 things here

1. Money - it was all about the money
2. Toronto - it was all about the money provided he didn't have to
play against Toronto; the place where is heart really is which should
tell you what type of effort he'll give. One cannot play to their
potential if their hear resides elsewhere.

I am. Thought he'd take the contender over the "tender". Guess the cost of
living in Sweden was more than I thought. Your last comment is right on.

I think that the one more after money was his agent, because of the
provision. Matts made an mistake in not making a decission early enough
for the eastern teams (including Montreal) to have cap space for him.

Of course when you think of it, 20 mil. two year contract offer must
start to tease you, even though you are not short of pettycash. I think
it is better for the Canadiens that he goes west. He is still a
remarkable hockey player capable of helping any team, even the Rangers.

But as you say, it is good that this is over, even though I do not
believe that we will not hear or read about speculations what he could
have done in Montreal, New York or Philadelphia.

You are right, it was the money, but the most important thing was the
missing cap space in Montreal and New York, when Vancouver could offer
him this ridiculous contract, he would be fool not to take it. If it
were only about money, then he would of course jump at it immeadiately
from the beginning of the season. Now it is prorated and his holiday
costed him about 5 mil. Some of us would have jumped for that money and
forgoten about our leisure time.

Don't worry. Mats Sundind is a dedicated athlete, he will work for his
new team kust as hard he would have worked for the Mighty Leafs.

Not to mention that he won't have to put up with constant jeering when
the Rangers play any North Eastern team.

Not to be smug, but I put it to bed months ago.

I really didn't want him unless he was here for training camp and
prepared to start the year with the Canadiens.

No anger towards Mats..he was in a position few athletes get to
be..total freedom to determine where you will play or even IF you will
play. Good for him and more power to him.

I just want total commitment from players who are pulling in that kind
of cash. That wasn't Mats intention..he was going for max money and (I
think) less pressure than would come down on him in Montreal. Thats not
a criticism..going to the Leafs traditional rival and being expected to
be the standard bearer for this proud franchise is something that might
give anyone pause...especially a man like Mats who became synonymous
with Leafs hockey.

I just didn't see it happening once he turned down Bob at the start of
this whole process.

Indeed, Rangers are a far better bet than the 'nucks to advance in the
post-season.

In the end, given with almost half the season done, Sundin *could*
have hitched himself to New York by forgoing a big cheque, but oh
well .... his choice.

If it was just for the money he would have signed a 2 year contract.

Sorry Rob, but that's bullshit. If it was about money he would have signed
July 1st. And thanks to Bettman's friggin league you folks have little
exposure to the teams or culture of the west. I don't want to demean the
aspirations of the Habs, I was as big a fan of Montreal as ever existed before
the Canucks finally got their seat in the club. But the hype about the Habs
winning the cup this 100th year was really laughable. The cup is going to
a team out of the west. No one team comes close to Detroit or SJ. We all
have hope, and anything can happen, but.......

As far as less pressure ? Uh uh. There's as much pressure, media and
otherwise in Vancouver as there is in Montreal. Canadians from coast
to coast love their hockey and their team and Montreal has no monopoly
on passion. In fact, the Habs posturing that they somehow _deserve_
the cup this year, and they actually have a shot, is quite funny-- not a
chance in hell.

Your Western arrogance will make you look silly when an Eastern team
cleans up in the finals

Bang on, man. As far as I recall, we kicked Detroit's butt, beat
Minnesota and Calgary (considered to be West conference top teams) and lost
to Anaheim despite thoroughly outplaying them. If we make it to the finals
(huge if the way this team plays some nights), I like our chances thank you
very much.

All that "soul searching" just to go for the money in the end. LOL.

Good for the Canucks though. They ponied up the dough intially (too much
IMO, but anyway). They iced a team still with plenty of cap space for him.
They deserved him.

I can't believe people think this was about the money. Then again,
there have been a lot of people with their hands over their ears just
blathering on with their own nonsensical interpretations of Sundin's
motivations throughout the saga.

If it was about the money, $20M/2years sounds a heckuvalot better than
$5M/1yr, and Vancouver has made it clear throughout that the full $20M/
2 has always been on the table.

The Canucks are a better team than the Rangers.

They don't have to move any players to make room for Sundin.

They'll still have enough cap room to add significant players before
the deadline.

It sounds like Sundin's decision was not based on money at all. In
fact, he didn't even take the 2nd year of the contract, which could
have negatively impacted the Canucks' ability to retain key impending-
UFAs like the Sedins, Ohlund, etc.

Good for Sundin, good for Canucks fans, I say.

Now here's hoping he rips it up for them and helps put them in the Cup
finals.

l8r,
Gerry

If we get Sundin.. - I believe that there is a distinct possibility that Saku is gone. But not to T.O. but somewhere else in another deal. We simply would not be able to support them both salary-wise and for the many other-wises that I am sure you can imagine. Mark.

Sundin - I gotta say, if Mats signs with the Rangers or the Devils later today then he vaults wayyy up into my most hated list. Because if he's been yanking our chain for the last week with the I-dunno-if-I'm-gonna-retire riff, just to get to UFA and sign with..

Sundin ....again - You really have to hand it to Gainey. He has this team in great shape with plenty of cap space. Of all the teams out there ready to move on Sundin, this is the team with the cap space AND the best options. Its a good team without Sundin and if you add...

Sundin for Gainey - Leafs need a nice english manager and the habs need a goal scorer. I think it's a godd deal.

If not Sundin, what about Teemu? - I like the Tanguay deal, good trade for Bob. Sundin is not so certain, even though he's been cleared to talk with the Habs. He might be just shopping around to see what he's worth to the Leafs. I read on RDS that Saku has been talking to Teemu about..
