Since Sutter got here the primary thing he has done is get Kipper,
with out our goalie there would have been no Cup run or anything else
approaching a winning season. Seems to me although Sutter struck
gold with Kipper its hard to find anything else he's done and Sutters
been riding on Kippers coat tails ever since. Maybe the problem isn't
the coach but rather the GM for the supporting cast Sutter has given
him.

Doesn't he get credit for drafting players like Phaneuf ?

Dunno. He may not have been top notch as GM in terms of the overall
balance of his decisions, but he hasn't done badly. I look around the
league (even just the playoff scoring race) and I see all the ex-flames
doing well and I try to remember what we actually got for those guys -
most (all ?) of them pre-date Sutter.

Nylander (we got Nazarov ? Dumb at the time, worse now)
St. Louis (did we get anything)
Savard (don't think we got full value for him either)
Drury (can't honestly remember what we got for him)

In fact we did better out of the cases where the players were going to
leave anyway -- for Nieuwendyk and Fleury we ended up with Iggie and
Regehr, two very good players.

Time to sign Martin Gelinas? - He's got a year or two left, and the Flames sure could use him.

New NHL format and schedule ? - I know plans to revamp the schedule were scuppered last year, but I think it is long overdue. Here's my 2 cents: Add two expansion teams to bring the league up to 32 (means 50 % of teams make playoffs). Align into 4 divisions (North, West, South,..

Well the pre-season is over... - What a disaster it turned out to be. I would have expected a couple more wins with the line-ups that played each game. We can only hope that the regular season starts off a bit better... ;)
