Post subject: Time for the Instigator Rule to go
Archived from groups: alt>sports>hockey>nhl>det-redwings (more info?)

This has to happen in order to move the game forward, and there was no
better illustration of it than the recent incident with Alfredsson.

Everyone on the ice needs to be accountable...but with the current rule,
guys like Alfredsson and Tootoo can run around causing havoc and run to the
the bench and hide - no one can go after them.

For the most part, the refs are taking care of it. But there are TIMES when
the players need to police themselves.

As for fighting...it is part of the game and has been for years. Now with
the new rules, an enforcer will be of much different breed than in the
past - he will have to be a skilled guy (Probert being the prototypical
model - early in his career).

Cherry used the Flyers as an example..but people only think of Schultz and
Kelly. While they were the muscle, Philly had a TON of skill in Clarke,
MacLeish, Leach, Barber, Ashbee, Saleski, Dupont, etc. But it was Schultz
and Kelly who gave the skilled guys room to play. (Hull alluded to it as
well last night)

How do we tell the NHL we as fans want this rule GONE?
