I dunno, but given the Sharks uneven play of late, and not exactly
inspiring offense, I'll bet some players are getting ready to pack
their bags before the holidays. They can't be thinking they are safe,
and this is the time of year most good teams start thinking about a
trade. I'm sure they would rather be on the ice, than worrying about
their next PO box number.
I admit I have seen exactly one game in November, but it was the last
one, so I have a couple of observations. Carle and Ehrhoff both seem
to have lost some confidence. Did you see Ehrhoff swoop in, heading
straight to the goal with no one in his path, and pass? He should go
end to end at least once a game, and use that skating ability! The
Sharks are predictable, playing dump and chase most of the time. When
a defenseman brings it in, the other team is suddenly short a guy on
the rush (see: S. Niedermeyer).
As for Carle, he has to realize that he needs to take chances to be
effective. His defense is still spotty, so he has to make up for that
on the other end as Ozo does.
Murray looks great out there, and McLaren, a bit shaky. Vlasic hasn't
soph slumped, but I thought his offense would be emerging by now.
Semenov is OK, at best.
Of the forwards, Seto looks awesome, and I like the line with Cheechoo
and Joe, although I saw Wilson swap out for Marleau later. Roenick is
as good as any of us can expect, and it is nice to have that right
handed faceoff guy out there, even if he is less than 50% wins. On
the Sharks goal, Roenick beat Pahlson on the face-off.
Marleau looks OK, but he needs to shoot more. He's got the 2nd best
shooting % on the team (Joe is above 32%, and needs to shoot more
too), and if he takes more shots he will certainly bury more.
As for who to trade and for what? I don't know. The Sharks seemingly
have the parts, but just can't get them moving in the same direction.
Outside of minor trades to monetize marginal players, I can't see the
big one coming. I wish they had picked up Rafalski, although I know
he wanted to go home. Jovo has a no trade clause. Redden? Maybe.
But Ottawa are playing really well right now, and Redden is part of
that. Anyway, it should be interesting... >> Stay informed about: A Week Off? |

Very good post.
Some folks should be worried. I hope they have reason to be.
Ehrhoff is nearing my "it's been nice" phase. He just hasn't improved
his game at all. He can skate swell, but makes some bonehead plays
and couldn't shoot it in an open barn door for a $1MM lotto prize.
You can't live on "potential" alone forever.
McLaren looks like he's gone over the hill. He always was useless on
offense, and now he's not hitting a soul.
Carle has definitely slumped and seems a mere shadow of his former
self. I wonder what's going on and what the coaches are telling him.
He needs to turn it loose again.
Ozo has looked tremendous lately, which either means he's really
playing well, or the rest of the defense is so uninspiring in their
play that he stands out. maybe, some of both.
The overall offensive effort is, well, offensive. They just look
amateurish out there, and it's showing up by not showing up on the
stat sheet. Somebody, RW or an assistant coach, is doing a terrible
job in teaching these guys how to form a rush and how to skate across
the line and keep possession. And, the line changes are just
incessant and obviously have a much higher priority than offense.
Somebody needs to throw the book away.
Marleau is disappointing, too, needless to say. Really, whether he
stays or not, we need a new captain.
I can't see any productive trade they could make right now, and I
think they have a mental and coaching problem that won't be addressed
in the least by persoennel changes.
It will be interesting to see what DW does as things unfold. We've
stayed the course for a long time. >> Stay informed about: A Week Off? |

How many promising offensive forwards does that make now for the Sharks
that have been so scared out of trying to make plays that they become
totally ineffective? At least two.

Offensive defensemen, I assume you mean? Probably far more than two.
Stuart and Carle pop into my head right away, but I'm sure there are
more considering we had no offensive defensemen at all that I can
remember during the Sutter years. >> Stay informed about: A Week Off? |

Sorry, meant offensive defensemen.

You know what the common denominator is with all these teams,
different players and different coaches? None of them play the games
like they EXPECT to win. >> Stay informed about: A Week Off? |
