"I was playing indoor soccer and it (my foot) sort of cracked,"
Wellwood told the Windsor Star.

This'll cramp his off-season training regimen (such as it is), and may
be the final reference to him as a Leaf.

I hope not, Regardless of his effort or fitness level ect. he has
talents that many of the current leafs do not.
he can learn to play better D. He can improve his effort level. I
think it would be well worth the leafs while to give him a try with
the new coach.

This is always what I pictured Kyle's off-season training regimen as, didn't
think I would ever see it confirmed.

I'd rather give the spot to someone with belly-hunger. Skills,
health, and character - Wellwood gets 1 out 3 from me.

The big question is who replaces him? Especially if Sundin is let go. Who
comes in and fills an offensive role? I read today that Fletcher wasnt
expecting to go after big name UFA's this summer, which is probably a smart
move as it sounds like they want to position themselves for a shot at John
Taveras or Victor Hedman next summer.

Besides, this years UFA crop isnt exactly overwhelming.

The Leafs aren't overwhelmed with a wealth of young prospects to come up and
replace Kyle. I'd rather see Kyle in there with his skill, then Dominic
Moore or Boyd Devereaux. Yes, they both work harder then Kyle. But neither
has a tenth of Wellwood's skillset.

Getting a guy like Wellwood to play hard is hopefully something Ron Wilson
can fix, because Maurice wasn't having any luck with him.

Tunnel.

PMaurice tried to run interference for the guy and said he'd followed
the rehab instructions. But that was after his dad (?!) was publicly
quoted about Kyle not doing the rehab but instead, resting. Ken
posted it here (November?), and after the second op, the injury, and
his powder-puff play ... just let him go. Hopefully, he has that
Steve Sullivan-type revelation and turns it around somewhere. He has
some skills that lesser players would bleed for. Brendan Bell looked
great in the AHL first round, that was after a few years of the TO
staff trying to get him to work harder, and he moved on to Phoenix.
I"ll take Stajan's lesser skill and better drive eight days a week.

I heard a story, i think on the FAN 590 the other day when they were
talking about Wellwood's injury. Apparently, he was told by the
training staff a couple of years ago of his need to bulk up and get into
good game shape and he replied, "Well, Wayne Gretzky didn't lift weights
did he, and neither do i!"

Speaks volumes of both his devotion to do what's necessary to get to
that next level and the chutzpah to compare himself in whatever way to
Gretzky!
