Hey, we'll take it, I guess, given recent outcomes at home, but going
two periods with four measly shots in each is hardly encouraging for
the offense. And, they almost went totally to sleep in the third with
the three-goal lead. Blowing that could have been devastating.

I noted, too, a couple instances in their own end where some Sharks
would be sitting there, stationary along the boards, waiting for a
puck that was sent around to finally get there, rather like a football
receiver that doesn't come back for a late-thrown pass. While the
Shark was waiting patiently, a Columbus player would swoop in and cut
the puck off before it ever arrived.

This is precisely the kind of lackadaisical play that can't be
accepted, not to mention the whole business of tossing pucks up the
boards to stationary forwards, glued to the boards, too, stinks
anyway. No wonder they can't generate enough rushes or momentum.

They still need to get much more aggressive at both ends, IMHO.

Yet another eeked out win. They are playing better, I'll give them
that. It appears that the fire has finally been lit under Bernier,
that's something.

I was at the game. They and the Blue Jackets each had a minimum of
shots in the first period. Sharks had only four. Their passing and
movement out of the defensive zone was poor. But, they were very
physical. Sharks were taking it to the Jackets with a steady diet of
very hard checks. That carried through into the second period. It
became clear that between periods the lack of shots had to be the
focus. In the second there were times that the Sharks were just
throwing the puck toward the net from any and all angles, trying to
get something going. The had eleven shots during the period, and
seemed to have much better movement in the offensive zone, which I
attribute to "unloading" toward the net. The shots seemed to create
havoc for the Blue Jackets, and created opportunities for the Sharks.
That carried through into the early third period, but after the Sharks
third goal - giving them a 3-0 lead, I said to my guests they needed
one more to make it somewhat safe. Instead, the Sharks stopped moving
their feet, you could see them gliding instead of skating, whenever
they had the puck in the corners of the offensive zone, their support
was all at the blue line, leaving them outnumbered deep, and they
seemed to just let off the gas - the sort of "soft" play that has
gotten them in trouble all season. And guess what? Columbus quickly
scored twice. Fortunately, the Sharks seemed to wake up and ended
playing very good D to finish it.

If the Sharks can keep their feet moving and continue to be physical,
they'll make progress. But that's still a BIG if....

BTW.... Nabby continues to be spectacular. And it was good to see
Murray back - that fella is a punishing force out there, and he seems
to actually enjoy dishing it out.

I was going to comment on Nabby. He looked sort of in slow motion, but
still made some great saves, but then let in at least 1 not-so-great
goal. At first I though he had entered some sort of Zen state, where
the game looked slo-mo to him, like Neo at the end of the first Matrix
movie stopping the bullets.

Then I wondered if he isn't finally just tiring out a bit.

It could very well be some of both. He's worn, but so dialed in, that
he's playing better than ever 98% of the time, but will start to have
a glitch or two. It could finally be time to give the poor man a rest.

Well, he has 5 days between games so he will get some rest. Then he should
be good for the second half of the season.
