While the Wild started out hot, they have settled in to be a slightly better
than .500 team. What is disturbing is that they are 1-7 against the top 4
teams in the West. They still have a ways to go to be a top tier team. I
predict they will finish between 7th and 8th in the conference and will once
again be one and done in the playoffs. If this does happen I would have to
say this would be a disappointing year for the Wild. Anything other than a
first round win would be disappointing. I wish I could be more optimistic,
but their struggle against the best in the west will seal their fate.

22-15 is actually more like .681

By your math, most of the league is a "slightly better than .500 team.

Well, after the Red Wings it's a steep drop-off to everyone else in
the conference. The Wild have more than held their own against
everyone else in the conference, IMO.

I'm betting they will end up seeding somewhere around 5th or 6th in
the conference when all is said and done this season.

Hardly. Any winning season and a playoff run is a good season, IMO.

>Anything other than a first round win would be disappointing.

A first round exit would be disappointing, but it would still not
detract from some of the great games the Wild have given
us this season....and the season isn't even halfway over yet.

>I wish I could be more optimistic

Don't we all? ;-)

>but their struggle against the best in the west will seal their fate.

I've watched the Wild beat the Ducks, Av's, Canucks, Flames, etc.
so far this season. The Sharks and Wings have given the Wild a
lot of trouble, but beyond that I haven't seen the Wild play a team
they didn't have a good chance against this season Hell, they even
had a good shot at that last Sharks game on Monday, IMO.

All in all, I think the Wild are doing just fine so far this season.

Doing just fine if you are satisfied with a team that is like 8 to 10
others in the conference. Parity exists, but wouldn't it be nice to
have the Wild be a step above. If they face Detroit, Dallas or San Jose
in the first round, I predict they will not make it to the second round.
A one and done playoff series would be a disappointment.

In a league where such parity exists, it's not an easy feat to be
a top tier team, especially in a smaller market like Minnesota.

Overall, I think the Wild have been doing well over the years, and
this one is no different. In fact, this may be the best Wild season
so far.

It would be a disappointment, sure, but not necessarily an indictment
of the entire season, IMO.

Oh no, let's not debate the smaller market stuff again. Canada is a
small market. The Wild have the advantage of sellout's and I bet
because of the demographics, the TV revenue for a MN hockey team is
better than Dallas. In fact I bet the Wild are in the top 5 as far as
generating revenue in the league. When it comes to hockey, Minnesota is
a large market.

Like it or not, Minnesota *is* a smaller market area for pro sports.

If it wasn't we'd still have the Stars around.

Wait a minute, I thought earlier this year you predicted a finish much
higher....You aren't going sour on the team now.

You thought wrong. I said they would finish at or near the top
of the division and make the playoffs. You didn't seem to
think that would happen.

Nope, not at all.
