According to the last I read about it, Backstrom was saying this
wasn't a serious groin injury and he would be back for tonights
game.

Backstrom has had on/off minor groin problems since he joined
the Wild. It's usually nothing major and doesn't get in the way of
him playing very often.
Groin strains are fairly common among hockey players.

Ever try to do the "toes up" or "butterfly" stops of a puck going into
a net? It requires a lot of flexibility and agility. I can see how
goalies could have groin pulls fairly often.
In general, just the task of trying to skate hard puts some serious
strain on the groin muscles (inner thigh). When I played in high
school, after an especially hard-skating night, my groin muscles
would ache for days...granted, I was nowhere near NHL condition,
but still. Ouch.

I never pulled a groin playing, but for some reason I had hamstring
issues. But if ever a body part was sore...it was the inner thigh
muscles. No matter how many hours I spent on a slide board, I could
never get them conditioned enough to stay away from the sore inner thighs. >> Stay informed about: backstrom |

Methinks I shouldn't have asked "Why"! <G> Discovered more info than I
need to know. I realize that the skating abilities today seem to be
faster, etc....but I thought you all wore something special to help with
problems in the groin area. Am I missing something here? And maybe my
suggestion re: Spanx wasn't so far off anyhoo. Those are just muscles,
can they not be prepared for NHL skating? Seems to me this is a very
common problem lately......more so lately, I think. Think Ballet,
Boys.

LOL
No, the protective cup protects the 'family jewels', not the groin
muscles in the thighs.
Sometimes taping up tightly with ace bandages or thigh support shorts
can help, but I always found them to get in the way and be very
uncomfortable for wearing for very long.

Yes, and as a matter of fact, many pro athletes have done ballet
conditioning....helps with flexibility and muscle strength, from what
I've read.
Personally, I don't look good in tights or a tutu, so I just stuck to
sprint skating workouts and leg weights to work on the groin muscles.
If I tried to skate that hard today, my legs would probably explode.

Ah, man, how did I ever miss this post? Sheesh, SS, I wasn't referring
to a "cup". I know what that's for!

Granted, those thigh support shorts might be uncomfortable for any
length of time but better than the alternative, don'tcha think?

Yep, I, too, have read that. I'm sure many pros tho do NOT indulge in
it.

LOL not all who "ballet" wear those. You have conjured up a wunnerful
thought of you tho.

You're forgiven. We do indeed get that way with age but then we also
get lazy with conditioning, do we not? ;-)
