Avs sign one of the Wings' best "prospects" - Avs signed Matt Hussey today. 5gp with the Wings last year. 3rd leading scorer of the Grand Rapids Griffins last year. Scored nearly 3x as many points last season as 06-07 NHL Hart Trophy finalist Evan McGrath. Avs also signed useless scrub..

Crosby signed for $8.7M per season.

28 goal guys are going to be getting $6M per year soon.

Or right now, if you're Ken Holland.

Yeah, I think that is the difference. Teams still only have so much
money to spend
unlike in the past where a few teams had infinite money to spend. I
see the stars
continuing to make big bucks and supporting cast players makeing less
than
the pre-lockout days.

Crosby, Vanek, etc. makes me wonder why we all lost a year of hockey.

This will either correct itself, or else there will be another league
formed.

I don't see why it matters to an Avs or Wings fan if Crosby and Vanek
get huge salaries. There's only so much money under the cap. There's
only so much of this that can happen before there just isn't any more
money left to spend on these guys. When that happens, players will
either have to sign for less, or else a new league will be formed for
the guys who aren't willing to play for the peanuts they are offered
because teams are blowing their entire wad on two or three Vaneks or
Crosbies.

This is nothing to worry about.

Yep. Which is why I mentioned the idea of another league. It's not like
it hasn't been talked about already.

I was going to cite an example of an average NHL player who makes too
little comparitively, and make an argument for that player being the
exact type of player who would play in a new league if there was one,
but the first two examples that popped into my mind were Ian Laperriere
and Brett McLean, one of whom makes as nice a living as his skill
allows, the other making more than he should already.

Perhaps it's not the veteran grinders who are going to be interested in
another league. Perhaps it will be rookies who aren't keen on making
chump change while the older players make a killing.

Or maybe it will be what others have talked about, where the NHL moves
more and more toward a Canadia-US league and the Euros stay put in Europia.

Regardless, something has to give. You can't pay everyone big bucks and
still remain under the cap. Everyone is getting a big raise these days,
and it's just a matter of time before everyone maxes out their cap room.
THAT'S when we see where this is headed. Anyone who thought cost
certainty was going to automatically lead to moderation as far as
contract values were concerned was fooling themselves. We may get there,
but we've already seen that it's not going to be a straight line there.

Are you on drugs? Talked about by whom exactly - your dog? The NHL
barely survives now with lacking attendance, no TV coverage and absolute
loser cities like Nashville, Alanta, Phoenix, etc. There is no "sports
fan" money out there for existing NHL and you think the sport can afford
another league. Jesus Christ man....

Smart GMs will get the best value for their cap dollar. In some
markets, that will mean overpaying stars to get the fans in the seats.
In other markets, that means bypassing the stars to get teams without
costly gaps - to compete for the cup.
