So I hear he got an invite to training camp. Is he that bad now that he
couldn't
get a contract from someone and had to settle for an invite or are the
concerns
about his health that led to this?

One of the most interesting competitions during the exhibition season
will be for the seventh spot on the blue line.

Kyle Quincey, Derek Meech (who doesn't have any more minor league
options), Jonathan Ericsson, Jakub Kindl, Brad Ference, Brent Sopel
and Jassen Cullimore will get time to win a spot during the Wings'
nine exhibition games.

"We're going to give them every opportunity to show us what they can
do," general manager Ken Holland said.

One of the Wings dipshits on another forum, a Kronwall slapdick no less,
pointed out that Sopel was better offensively than Kronwall was last
season. I don't care enough to go and check for myself, but if that's
true, man, the Wings are badly overpaying for Kronwall.

Sopel will fit in very nicely with the Wings should things work out that
way. He'll be a 2nd pairing D with Kronwall if not a very solid 3rd pairing.
Where if the Avs were to sign him....he'd compete for 1st pairing minutes.
That's how bad the Avs defense is at this stage. Even after signing Hannan.

What? The guy you envision being a top 4 d-man on your team is only there
on a try-out basis?

Things must be bloody awful on Detroit's blueline if that is the case
because guys that
go to camp on pro tryouts are usually scrubs that can't get a contract ,
just like
Cullimore and Downey.

I'd be shocked if he didn't make the team and make a significant
contribution. I'm a bit confused as to why he didn't hook up wth
anyone with a real contract.

I wouldn't mind him on our 2nd or 3rd pairing at all.

Good observation, and I agree. I'm wondering why he didn't get
offers. Perhaps he didn't like them and miscalculated his UFA worth
or something...

Take away Lidstrom and show me the difference.

Take away Lidstrom and the Avs are much much better.

Rafalski and Liles are a wash.
Clark is a hell of a lot better than Kronwall.
Leopold is head and shoulders better than Lebda (that's not even a fair
comparison).
Chelios and Skrastins are a wash.
Sauer is a hell of a lot better than Lilja (not even close).

And I didn't even bother putting out best defenseman into the conversation.

Hell, given how much better the five Avs above are than the five Wings
above, when you put Lidstrom and Hannan back in the equation, I don't
see how Detroit is any better than Colorado on defense.

This is my question as well, how did the guy's stock drop that far that
he had to accept a training camp invite?

Does Detroit get to use his 7.6 mil to replace him?

HD. (This is Eric, btw).

With what's left in the UFA pool? Sure, go right ahead.

What part of "I think Rafalski's better defensively" didn't you

Why would I take part in any conversation by taking Lidstrom out of it. He's
what we bank on and why the rest of the D doesnt even NEED to be as good as
other teams. He makes THAT big a difference. Your team doesnt have anyone
like him and never have. Never will for that part. Players like him come
along once or twice in a lifetime. 5 of the last 6 Norris Trophys. And Hasek
behind him. Look what your team has back there! Ha!
