Good points. The guy definitely lacks a filter between his brain and his
mouth. I'm almost tempted to call him the John Rocker of the NHL. He's
lucky that hockey remains pretty much under the radar in the American sports
landscape; otherwise, the media here would have roasted him alive by now.
Also can't help wondering how Avery's French Canadian teammates *really*
feel about him. They do seem to be standing solidly behind him, at least
publicly, to this point. Maybe he apologized to them privately, or at least
clarified his statement to their satisfaction. One thing's for sure: he's
got great chemistry on the ice with Eric Belanger, so I doubt there's really
a serious problem in the locker room.
Regarding the racism, George Laraque of Edmonton claimed Avery called him a
"monkey" on the ice during a preseason game, but none of his own teammates
backed him up on it, so I doubt that one actually took place. Not that I
would put it past Avery to say such a thing, mind you....
My guess is Avery is no more or less racist than the average NHL player or
the average American/Canadian citizen for that matter, but because he lacks
that politically correct filter, he could someday wind up embarrassing
himself far more seriously than he already has. I hope he learns at least
enough discipline to survive and thrive as a member of the Kings for many
years to come.
