It's happened. MANY 'orrible things have happened to that. They have
to hammer dents out of it now and then.

Google on "Guy Carbonneau", "Vinnie Paul" and "Stanley Cup", for
example.

Mark Messier took it to a strip club in Edmonton and let patrons drink
out of it. They wound up taking it to an auto shop to hammer the dents
out of it.

There are three.

The original bowl, which they keep at the HHOF.

A duplicate, which they awarded tonight and which travels around with
the champions.

A replica, kept for display at the HHOF when the current traveling
trophy is out traveling.

(The original bowl is fairly brittle at this point and wouldn't take
all the drop-kicking.)

The original got some fairly bad engraving over the years and isn't
much to look at, to be honest. Some teams did some pretty strange
things to it in the early days.

Not the NHL, but one year in the CHL a player dropped the championship
trophy. It was made partially of glass, but luckily it was thick enough that
it only had a chunk taken out of it.

The NHL has some beautiful trophies all around. Compared to them, the ones
they hand out in MLB and the NFL look like stuff they picked up from Jimmy
at Westside Trophies.

I didn't know that.. thanks for the information.

Has any version of the Stanley Cup ever been destroyed?

(I would bet there's two identical copies of the thing, for
emergencies.)

Rumor has it that during the reign of the Stars that Vinnie Paul (drummer
from Pantera and friend of the Stars) had the Cup over at his house for a
Stars Party. The Cup was tossed off the balcony and into the swimming pool
and suffered a dent that had to be repaired.

How long before they move the HHOF to somewhere in the States to better
reflect the current state of affairs in the NHL?

Heh. Soccer's ratings are higher than the NHL's right now.
