It amazes me how common sense seems to have been left outside the
arena during the NHL CBA negotiations. I don't know how anyone could
sympathize whatsoever with the NHLPA's stance. In the Feb. 17 Sun,
there was an article explaining how other leagues control salaries.
Now, let me get this straight: The NBA has a $44 million soft cap, and
the NHLPA thinks a $49 million soft cap is reasonable? In what world
do these guys live?
Here's some reality for Mr. Goodenow: Outside of maybe 12 markets, six
of them Canadian your sport has nowhere near the following the NBA
has! You can't even begin to compare the television revenues between
the NBA and NHL! Only the highly deluded would pass the lack of
television revenue on to bad NHL marketing. The interest is not there
for the sport, and at best would have to be cultivated over time. Now
is not the time for the NHL to be considering itself in the same
"league" as the NBA.
No wonder many of the players have decided to spend the winter in
Europe. Their egos can't handle reality. The interest in NHL markets
would suggest that the money they are making over there is a lot
closer to what they should be making here. Rather than accepting
reality, they choose to live in the fantasy world that has brought the
NHL to this point.
