I always get excited leading up to the draft, and I always end up
disappointed every time.

A few years back, Kopitar fell into our laps and Nonis inexplicably took
Bourdon when we were already loaded at that position.

This year, Beach was ours for the taking and he takes Hodgson. Let's see,
6'3 centre with a hard shot and a nasty streatk or a 5'10 centre with
questionable speed but who was rated the most "intelligent" player on the
team. Congratulations Gillis! You just drafted Brendan Morrison part deux.
He really helped us win all those cups!

I know that whenever the Canucks were having trouble scoring goals, I found
myself often saying "you know, a player with more intelligence would have
found a way to score". When the Canucks could barely must a shot in the
general area of the net, I would have console myself by saying "A player
with more character and integrity would have found a way to score".

This team is almost smurf like outside of Taylor Pyatt. They have never had
a big, mean centre who could both fight and score. Bertuzzi was the only
player who was like that he played the wing. But no, same old BS every
time. Drafting a player because of intangibles like "he played on a winner
at every level" is absolutely retarded.

Oh well. I guess now I get to look forward to a bunch of hype leading up to
the FA period before the Canucks end up signing no one of consequence.
Pavol Demitra, welcome to your new team.

Pavol Demitra. Bleeeh.

It would be laughable if Gillis manages to do jack this summer and ends up
fielding a team made up essentially of Nonis drafts and acquisitions. We'll
be wondering next summer why the hell Gillis was hired to replace Nonis in
the first place and the only possible conclusion we can come up with is that
they saved money on donuts.

I didn't snip so anyone who missed the original would get a chance to read it.

Right bloody on. Even if Hodgson turned out to be the greatest player
in the history of the game, it still would have been a terrible pick because
of the reasoning behind the pick.

I sure hope I'm wrong, but I can't help but think Gillis is a mile wide and a
1/4 inch deep, especially when it comes to the guys who really matter, the
guys who play the game.

Thumbs rating:

Off ice:
--keeping V.............................2 down
--keeping Tamby...................2 up
--keeping Bowness..............1 up / 1 down...up if he has no say on the
D system, down if it's his.

--makingsmyldisappear...... 2 up
--delorme et al........................ 2 be determined

On ice:

Do we see a pattern developing here ?

All but the last category= +8

I'd give the draft a zero, not enough picks, same old scouts

Cammalleri, yeah -2, I thought the Canucks could have done something,
maybe not the pick but a youngster and the second round pick.

Jokkinen, same although only Edler and Bieksa would be available to
trade, don't the rest have NMC's?

Clark is a waste but at 7th, well, I agree a long shot European would
have been wiser. However, at 7th round, the Canucks can sign a few
equivalent undrafted players and be as far ahead. No worries.

No trades. Nonis didn't have enough time to give everyone on the team no
movements. :-)

I think it would have been Bieksa and Kracker. Kracker I wouldn't care, but
I'm ambivalent about Bieksa. I wouldn't want to lose him, but to get something
good you have to give up something good. Tipping it in favor of getting
Jokinen for me, is V's [ or Bowness ] system which discourages Bieksasas
from doing what he demonstrated he was good at. Pinching, quick stretch
passes and rushing the puck. If he is going to remain shackled and just blast
it out dump it in, then give me skill up front for him.

I always liked him, but as you point out, 35 yrs old, 3 years left on his
contract @ 5.5, 5.5, and 3. And throw in his shoulder surgery......

But I'd dismiss this rumour. He took 2.5 mill less to go to Washington
where his wife wants to live, plus he has a no movement clause.

Cue next rumour. <g> Jovo on his way !

While in theory that sounds great, I'm afraid next year at this time would be
too emotionally damaging to watch Gillis pass on Tavares and select Freddy
Kratheimer, the 2008 College Jeopardy champ who dabbled in hockey as
a break from studying, his work with the underpriviledged, foodbanks, and
a crossing guard in a senior citizens retirement community.
