No, the comment was: "More people will play golf in 1-4 person groups than
will ever play field hockey in however-big-a-team-is groups." The "in
America" was his example to so-called prove his point.

I was highlighting the fact that in many parts of the world there are at
least as many people who play (field) hockey as golf. Additionally, the 30
million to 50 comment is such a stupid exageration of the situation, even in
America, that both sections of the original post clearly show an
Americo-centric attitude that doesn't comprehend the fact that (in a
sporting sense) the USA is a very atypical country.

I suspect the 30 million American golfers still dwarf the
number of people worldwide who know how many people are on
a side in field hockey. Including India and/or Pakistan.

I think you are proving my point. On what basis do you make that statement?

The combined populations of India and Pakistan (1.224 billion) is more than
4 times the population of the US (293 million). As already pointed out,
hockey is a huge sport in India/Pakistan yet you are claiming that (ignoring
the rest of the world) less than 2.5% of their people know how many people
are on a (field) hockey team. Thats like saying that less than 7 million
people in the US know how many people there are on a Baseball team.

In fact, the US is ranked 11= in the world for women's hockey, so I wouldn't
be at all surprised to find 30 million people IN THE US who knew how many
people there were on a (field) hockey team.

In the US, there *might* be 30 million that know how many players are
on an ICE hockey team, although I suspect the actual number is lower
than that. For FIELD hockey, I suspect the number is less than 1
million, probably much less. According to the US field hockey
association's own web page, total player participation in the US is
estimated at 100,000. FOr every person who actually plays, you think
there are 300 who know anything about it? Not a chance.

I suspect that George W. Bush adopts economic policies that lead to the
declining value of the US dollar, in order to reward his good friends in
Australia. Of course, just because I suspect it doesn't mean it's true.

World ranking and participation don't seem to be correlated at all.
China has (from memory) 300 hockey players and Korea 1000. Both those
countries have done quite well in men's and women's hockey in recent
years. Obviously they've noted that it is an Olympic sport and put funds
into developing the game at an elite level.

I'd bet if you did a survey most would say "9" instead of "25".

There are various rules for baseball. My nephew's little league has a limit (I
don't know what it is). A few years back the Colorado Rockies had a playoff
game (the last time I watched baseball on TV), and ran out of pitchers. Once a
player leaves the game, he cannot return. They could have activated more
pitchers before the game, but the total number of players for that game has to
fit within the rules. I bet that number isn't the same as in my nephew's
game.
